Ways of Remembering Things You've Forgotten

Personally, when I want to remember things I have forgotten, I put myself into a relaxed light trance, "space out" for a moment and think to myself "I am remembering" until what I want to know comes back to me easily. I wanted to jump into this article with an example of what I do when I lose or forget anything. It is so simple that I would be cheating you if I did not tell you about it in the first part of the article. The relaxed light trance can be done at any time really, once you know how to do it and it is second nature. The thing is, though, you must fully let it go and let yourself forget, to remember what you wanted to remember. At first, it seems like a hard process, but as you make it a habit, it is easy to get away from the problem, relax and find the solution.

The most important way to remember something you have forgotten is that removing yourself temporarily and completely from your problem until the answer comes to you. Because, being nervous never does any good or benefit to you. In fact, all you are is nervous and excited, that is it. Problems are never solved in this state, if anything they become worse in every way.

The kind of light trance I am talking about is not a "Svengali stereotype" thing, anyone can do this at any time, especially when in the heat of an activity such as running or strenuous work, because you can become so in concentration that answers you want just come to you powerfully especially when your deeper mind is receptive and ready for the answers or solutions.

Sometimes, the most powerful thing you can do is relax and forget about it. Because, you are so nervous, that, even if you know what you are doing, you will do it wrong somehow because of that nervousness. Be calm, be patient, understanding and tolerant of all situations, and all will be added really, even if it does…...

These three processes interact with different memory systems. The memory systems that appear to be most important in the educational area are short-term memory, working memory and long-term memory. Memory is thought to begin with the encoding or converting of information into a form that can be stored by the brain. This encoding process is also referred to as registering information in memory. The memory systems that are involved in the encoding or registration of information in memory are sensory memory and short-term memory. Sensory Memory Information which first comes to us through our senses is stored for a very short period of time within the sensory register. Simply put, the sensory register is associated with our five senses – seeing (visual), hearing (auditory), doing (kinesthetic), feeling (tactile) and smelling (olfactory). However, the sensory buffers that have received the most attention in the research literature are the visual and auditory sensory registers. Generally information remains in our visual memory for a very short time, approximately several hundred milliseconds. This information or "image" is somewhat like an exact replica of what we have just seen, and it fades with the passage of time (Pashler and Carrier, 1996). ...Josh Thompson History Ms. Kadlecek 7 April 2014 Remembering The word holocaust means “sacrifice by fire” and comes from the Greek words “holos” meaning whole and “kaustos” meaning burnt. The Holocaust of the 20th century was the mass murder of approximately six million Jews by the Nazi command during World War II. In Elie Wiesel’s memoir, Night, he states, “…in their early days of their accession to power, the Nazis in Germany set out to build a society in which there simply would be no room for Jews. Toward the end of their reign, their goal changed: they decided to leave behind a world in ruins in which Jews would seem never to have existed” (viii). The shock and horror does not lessen regardless of how many times a book or article is read or a movie watched about the Holocaust. Learning about the horrible, dark period from 1935 – 1945 is important in several ways. On one hand, it has been said we must learn about the past in order not to relive it. However, we are also told not to dwell in the past. When studying the Holocaust, both adages have truth. Chilling questions occur when learning about the Holocaust. They are questions that Elie Wiesel repeated in his acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986. Wiesel says he remembers asking his father, “Who would allow such crimes to be committed? How could the world remain silent?” (118). Millions of Jews were killed by overwork, starvation, torture, and cold blooded murder just because they were a different race......

...Holocaust would have been forgotten too, just like the Armenian Genocide. However, today, neither the Armenians nor the Jews have forgotten about the horrible experience that their ancestors have gone through. The way the Jews and the Christians were massacred and the reason behind it, wasn’t the only similarity when it came to the Holocaust and the Armenian Genocide. Both the Christians and the Jews were vulnerable. They both encountered a history of persecution and new democracies. Enemies also surrounded them. Nonetheless, what kept them on their feet after the incidents was their “talented and creative minorities who have been persecuted out of envy and obscurantism” (The University of Michigan- Dearborn). The Armenian Genocide and the Holocaust had many things in common, from both being vulnerable to both being massacred and starving to death because of their beliefs. William Saroyan gave a very important speech in 1935 about the Armenians and the Genocide that had occurred, nevertheless, I feel like this speech refers to the Jews too. Saroyan announced, “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose history is ended, whose wars have been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, whose literature is unread, whose prayers are no longer answered… For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a new Armenia!” (William Saroyan). ...Sondheim’s A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum When I think of musical comedy, Stephen Sondheim’s A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is the first show that comes to mind. Just three years ago, I had never heard of Forum before, until my high school choir director announced that it would be our 2008 musical. I was hesitant to audition at first, not knowing the plot or what I was getting myself into, but now I can honestly say that it was my favorite musical production ever to be a part of. Forum, a musical farce written in two acts and Sondheim’s first work on Broadway both as composer and lyricist, is “a non-stop laugh-fest in which a crafty slave (Pseudolus) struggles to win the hand of a beautiful but slow-witted courtesan (Philia) for his young master (Hero), in exchange for freedom” (MTI 1). In Sondheim’s own words, “there’s not a wasted moment in Forum, and the truth and the test of it is that the play is just as funny when performed by a group of high school students as it is when it is performed on Broadway. It is never not funny. The reason is, it is based on situations so solid that you cannot not laugh” (Gordon 25). Those of you that have had the pleasure of playing golf with Brian might recall hearing him call that one out. If you haven't heard it, then I'll give you his explanation for it. My name is Matt Lynch. As one of Brian's golfing buddies from Overbrook Golf Club I've been asked to make a few comments about the golf and Overbrook portion of his life. It is an honor to do so. Regarding his phrase "what a great par this is gonna be".....Brian was a very good golfer and part of that included being an accurate driver off of the tee. Occasionally though, even Superman would hit an errant tee shot...one destined for the trees or thick rough or some other obstacle. It's at that moment, when he knew that he'd hit a bad one, that he'd say "what a great par this is gonna be". He'd explain it like this. He saw no sense in cursing about the bad shot; no sense in slamming your club, much less ever tossing your club. That was all just wasting energy on something that was over. The shot was history and there's nothing you could do about it so why waste the energy crying about it? Instead, it would be so much smarter, so much more productive to channel all of that energy into the next shot. Look forward. ...we had every step of the way, the shoulders we had to lean on when things got rough, and the days we thought we couldn’t make it, but we did with a quick pep talk... or a shot or two of tequila. After today, we leave the protection of the College, the community of our friends, roommates, and teachers, to find and forge new communities of our own. I want to spend our final moments together reflecting on the distinctive kind of education that has shaped the way in which we think about the opportunities and challenges we have faced. Before going into whether or not Keyssar used these principles in his writing, it is important to understand what each of the three principles mean. In the principle of Ethos, or ethical appeal, it is used to persuade the audience or reader of the authors creditability. The Merriam-Webster dictionary describes Ethos as “the distinguishing character, sentiment, moral nature, or guiding beliefs of a person, group, or institution”. Ethos is using language that appeals to the topic and to the readers by using the correct vocabulary. This makes the author more crediable and evenhanded so that the readers believe the writers point of view. Pathos principle, emotion, is used to win over a reader by using their emotional convictions. Merriam-Webster describes this one as using pity or compassion.
