Within an organization, employee engagement is positively connected with the organizations productivity. Engagement means people want to come to work, that it is challenging yet meaningful and that they feel a sense of belonging with others within the workplace. Happiness is a step up from engagement and can be accomplished by offering and focusing on the positive aspect of special programs happening in the organization. This creates an atmosphere of people who think and act more creatively thus bring about more productivity. It develops employees who are motivated to consistently and energetically work towards the attainment of the organization goals. The important relationship between motivation and economics lies within—human needs, the goals people seek to attain, the characteristics of people that influence the motivational process, and the influence of rewards. The term motivation is a state of mind, desire, energy or interest that translates into action (Nahavandi et al., pg 144). An organization must continuously provide the right climate and opportunities to motivate their employees. The organization mission, the culture, the management style, and goal all provide the environment setting. In 2007, the founders of Fitbit (James Park and Eric Friedman) recognized the advanced development of wireless technology and created and designed a wearable product that changing the way we moved. The mission of Fitbit is (Fitbit, Inc. 2016):

Motivation is” the processes that account for an individual’s intensity, direction and persistence of effort towards attaining a goal” (Robbins 2003) Intensity is concerned with how hard a person tries. This is the element most of us focus on when we talk about motivation. Direction is the orientation that benefits the organization and persistence is a measure of how long a person can maintain his/her effort. What perhaps changed this way of thinking about employees was research, referred to as the Hawthorne Studies, conducted by Elton Mayo from 1924 to 1932 (Dickson, 1973). This study found employees are not motivated solely by money and employee behavior is linked to their attitudes (Dickson, 1973). The Hawthorne Studies began the human relations approach to management, whereby the needs and motivation of employees become the primary focus of managers (Bedeian, 1993). Motivation Theories Understanding what motivated employees and how they were motivated was the focus of many researchers following the publication of the Hawthorne Study results (Terpstra, 1979). Five major approaches that have led to our understanding of motivation are Maslow's need-hierarchy theory, Herzberg's two- factor theory, Vroom's expectancy theory, Adams' equity theory, and Skinner's reinforcement theory.
