The Importance of Movement in the Classroom

“Stop fidgeting! Hold still! Sit down! Stay in your seat!” Can you imagine children trying to learn while their teacher is constantly scolding the students for moving too much at their desks??? Children need to move! Not just for the sake of their physical selves, but also for social, emotional and cognitive development. Movement benefits the whole child. In this essay, I will explain why movement in the classroom is important for the physical, the social, and the academic well-being of students, and also how the teachers’ role can help determine the wellness of their classrooms.
Given the alarming facts surrounding the childhood obesity crisis, the state of children’s fitness is clearly the responsibility of all who are involved with children. As early childhood professionals we have a duty to educate the whole child and do our part to help keep our students as healthy as possible. According to The National Association for Sport and Physical Education, it is recommended that young children should not be sedentary for more than 60 minutes at a time, except when sleeping. While 60 minutes a day is the suggested minimum, it is further recommended that children accumulate “up to several hours” of physical activity daily (American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, 2011). For early childhood professionals, the notion of “accumulation” is reassuring. It means you don’t have to worry about setting aside massive blocks of time exclusively dedicated to physical activity. Although it’s developmentally fitting for children to be engaged in active play most of the time, today’s educational culture does not allow for that opportunity. Therefore, it’s good to

In this essay, I will be discussing the factors which contributed to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. I will also discuss the shift in the civil rights movement towards “black power” and the results of the shift. There were many factors that contributed to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In early 1960 a group of black college students staged a sit-in at a segregated Woolworth’s lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina. This caused similar demonstrations throughout the South that forced merchants to integrate their facilities. In the fall of 1960, participates of the sit-ins formed the SNCC or Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. This group worked to keep the spirit of resistance alive in the South. In 1961 a group of interracial students, collaborating with the Congress of Racial Equality, organized “freedom rides”. These consisted of interracial students traveling by bus throughout the south in an attempt to force the desegregation of bus stations. The ecosystem the students will be studying is saltwater marshes, plants and animals. Teaching this concept in the classroom will be most successful using a combination of a Jigsaw approach coupled with a STAD (student team achievement divisions) approach. The key elements of both the Jigsaw cooperative learning method and the STAD method include breaking students into racially, socio-economically, gender and differing ability groups. In terms of the assignment of salt water marshes, there are three main areas of information to be assimilated: tidal changes, plants and animals. The initial step, in accordance with the STAD model, would be to provide a basic lecture of saltwater marshes, covering facts and disseminating information on each of the three main topic areas. This could include a basic lecture/presentation that included pictures, written information, and other various forms of initial information on the subject. According to Haretos (2005), “the volatility in test scores makes it difficult for racially diverse schools to make adequate yearly progress (AYP), since every racial and ethnic subgroup must do so. So, when AYP is based on academic achievement levels, the subgroup rules create negative unintended consequences for the students they were designed to help, by subjecting racially diverse schools to sanctions under NCLB.” This consequence also threatens to increase the growing dropout and push-out rates for students in these sub-groups (Darling-Hammond, 2007). This is not just affecting low-income and minority students, but also students in non-minority groups as well. There are certain elements that I believe are important to have in an elementary classroom in order to produce life-long learners. Students spend a lot of time in their classroom which is why I find it important for a teacher to plan the layout and make it their second home.
