The difference between the EPS numbers reported by the analyst tracking services and the EPS in accordance with GAAP are due to pro-forma numbers presented by The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (GAP). These pro-forma differences are specifically related to a program called “Project Great Renewal” that was implemented by the board of directors of GAP. This project was implemented to improve the performance of the company. In the third quarter of fiscal year 1998, GAP closed two warehouse facilities in Canada. In the fourth quarter of fiscal year 1998, the board of directors decided to close 127 stores and dispose of two other properties. In the fourth quarter, GAP reported a Project Great Renewal charge of $213,153,000. This amount consisted of severance pay, occupancy costs, and a write-down of fixed assets. This huge expense led to a GAAP EPS of ($2.31). The pro-forma numbers eliminated all costs associated with Project Great Renewal. This is where the analysts derived their EPS of $0.19.
Pro-forma earnings are financial statements that seek to give a better indication of how well a company’s operations are actually performing. These earnings show what reported earnings would have looked like if some nonrecurring items were excluded. Pro-forma earnings are not in prepared in accordance with GAAP. Some common uses for pro-forma earnings are when a company has restructuring costs or impairment losses.
There are pros and cons associated with pro-forma reporting practices. One benefit is that these earnings exclude anything that can distort a company’s operating performance. In many cases, restructuring costs are a one-time expense, and taking such a huge hit in one period can distort the financial statements. ...The Great Pacific Garbage Patch This article is about the trash that ends up in the oceans and builds up into a giant garbage patch. When people throw their garbage on the ground it ends up in a small body of water and eventually travels into the ocean and gets stuck in this unbelievably large collection of trash. I think it is terrible when people litter because that litter ends up in the oceans and can hurt many animals. This problem is very serious and needs to be looked at as a bigger problem. Even though there are a lot of other problems going on in the world today, this is a big one that is affecting harmless animals all over. Plastic bags are mistaken for jellyfish, bottle caps are also, and are fed to baby birds. This is proven when birds die and left inside the body are tons of bottle caps and broken down plastic. I think this problem can be solved or at least made a little better. One possible solution is to ban plastic bags so people use the reusable ones. They could also make recycling a law. I am not sure how much can be done of what is already in the garbage patch, but we can try to keep it from getting worse. Because the water flows so far, there could always be places set up to pick up garbage that was missed earlier. The band that performed was called, “The Atlantics”. There was a man stroking the hell out of the electric piano, a man finessing the drums and bassist making it look too easy, and another man doing the boogie with the saxophone sounding like heaven to the soul. The group was led by two awesome vocalists of which were male and female. They had astounding voices and quickly aroused the audience, even captivating the local pedestrians who were strolling around the neighborhood. I believe the best part about this performance was that it was free admission and therefore, I had extra pocket change to snag a beer and socialize with other attendees. The set up and arrangements were nice and it all seemed well planned but I strongly felt that they could have used a bigger stage so they would have more room to dance and get jiggy with it.
