Better Education with School Uniform

...Better Education with School Uniforms The use of uniforms in public schools is an interesting and controversial topic. It is believed that uniforms help decrease violence, maintain discipline in the schools, and enhance the student’s performance. I had the opportunity to talk with several teachers and hear their different points of view regarding the use of school uniforms; I also asked some parents for their point of view. The majority of parents and teachers agree that uniforms would greatly contribute to the solution. Ana Linder, a teacher at the alternative school, “Skill Center” in Norfolk, has more than twenty students in her class. These students have all been expelled from their regular schools for discipline problems, including violence. One reason for the violence is clothing. Ana told me about one student who had been expelled from school because he had pushed another student down a flight of stairs to take a jacket that a student was wearing. Another student stole an expensive pair of tennis shoes because he had been joked about the cheep ones he was wearing and his mother, being a single parent, could not afford the expensive ones. Kids today are very fashion conscious and if they can’t afford the latest trends they try to get them by any means possible. Since fashion is so important to students, with the price tag being the major issue, the use of uniforms would eliminate peer pressure to conform thus eliminating the need for violence to obtain these expensive......

Co-Education vs Single-Sex School

...Nowadays, more and more people have noticed the phenomena that girls have been overtaking boys. The proportion of boys going to colleges is becoming smaller and smaller. Girls have been seeing doing better in different levels of the school. Therefore, a question being raised by the public is that between co-education and single-sex education, which will benefit our children more? As a teacher and parent, I strongly believe that the latter is a good choice. Gender-based classes can improve our children’s academic achievement through proper approaches suitable for their learning styles, foster better behaviors through promotion of role models and encourage them to explore who they truly are. [ok] As everyone acknowledges that each person has his own learning style, the learning style between boys and girls is not an exception, they are every different due to their physical and metal development. The development of boys’ reading ability is slower than girls’. Boys tend to be more active than girls. When boys know the answer they can’t wait to shout it out, in stead of girls would rather just understand and know the reason. The uneven development attributes to their different learning styles. For the better achievement, separating girls and boys to adapt approaches that fit their learning styles is the best way we can do. For example, in my grade one classroom, it seems like a disaster for boys to sit down to read, even the story they loved to listen. To girls, reading is......

The Effects of Parental Social-Economic Status on the Academic Performance of Secondary School Students

...SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS AND STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE. CHAPTER ONE Background to the Study It is an undebatable fact that the home is the fulcrum around which the early years of a child revolves. The central figures are the parents. While child-bearing and child-rearing cannot be divorced one from the other, the type of child-rearing practiced in a family has a tremendous impact on the entire life of the child including his or her academic life. Generally, the social climate or environment in which an individual finds him or her self to a large extent determines his or her behaviour and personality development. Consequently, parental guidance and discipline usually influence the behaviour of the children and at the apex of this parental influence is the mother. According to Olayinka and Omoegun (2001), the word "family" has its origin in the Latin word which could be translated to mean "domestic group". A domestic group is a group of people who habitually share a common dwelling and common food supply. According to Murdoch (1965) family is a social group characterized by common residence, economic, cooperation and reproduction; it includes adults of both sexes, at least two of who maintains a socially approved sexual relationship and one more children, own or adopted by the sexually cohabiting adult. The family provides for the physical maintenance of the child, offers him his first and most continuing social contracts, and gives him affection and other emotional......

Alternative Schools Are a Better Choice for Students

...Alternative Schools are a Better Choice for Students Christy Price AIU Online Alternative Schools are a Better Choice for Students What are alternative schools? Alternative schools according to the World Book Encyclopedia (2003) are, “… any public or private school that differs from traditional schools in curriculum, purpose, or teaching methods.” The definition comes from the 1960’s when free schools were created and contained smaller groups of students and teachers. During this time the general consensus was, kids would learn at their own pace and teachers were not meant to be viewed as authority figures but should be mentors to the students under their care. In comparison to public schools, which were seen as oppressive, free schools were a suitable alternative for many students (Miller 2002) For some students alternative high schools are the better choice for their education. Students who attend alternative schools do not lack the ability to learn they just have different learning needs than other students. According to the Waterville Alternative School (2003), located in Waterville Maine, public schools are created on a “one size fits all” basis. That is, there is one set curriculum, schedule, and teaching style. Each student is expected to learn at the same pace; however, this is not the reality. Thus, alternative schools have been created as a way to meet each student’s individual needs. Alternative schools are appealing to some students for a number of......

Children Who Exercie Perform Better Academically

...Running head: CHILDREN WHO EXERCIE PERFORM BETTER ACADEMICALLY Children Who Exercise Perform Better Academically Than Their Sedentary Obese Peers Michael Trollinger Grand Canyon University 21st Century Skills: Information and Communication Literacy UNV-104 Alli Holladay January 25, 2014 Children Who Exercise Perform Better Academically Than Their Sedentary Obese Peers The combination of a sedentary lifestyle and obesity causes more hazards for children than the obvious health issues such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The not so obvious and often overlooked symptom of lack of exercise and obesity is poor academic performance. Therefore, researchers and school administrations are starting to recognize the importance of having children participate in a regular exercise program as early as the fourth grade, to help them acquire both academic and cognitive success. Students who participate in exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, three days a week achieved better grades, attendance, and fewer behavior problems (Palmer, Miller, & Robinson, 2013, ¶ 3). According to the CDC “… physical activity can have an impact on cognitive skills and attitudes and academic behavior, all of which are important components of improved academic performance. These include enhanced concentration and attention as well as improved classroom behavior.”(Center For Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2010, p. 1) Due to biological, chemical and other neurological changes that......

The Benefits of Mixed Schools

...If so: mixed schools provide diversity, and a chance to mingle with both genders equally. It helps with maturity and more widespread friendships. Disadvantages, it's been said that grades and overall study quality declines in mixed schools. It's a pretty equal tradeoff. They learn when they are young to treat each other with respect and consideration. If not exposed to this environment there are some disadvantages. A male only school has a Homosexuality rate of 63% more than a public school open to all genders with a 14% rating. The Benefits of Mixed Schools Some evidence has suggested that boys in mixed schools performed better academically, as they are encouraged not to 'mess around' by their more responsible female classmates - but obviously this is a generalisation and might prove different in specific schools and even in particular classrooms. Some proponents of mixed schools claim these schools have a better atmosphere, since they are neither too 'bitchy', as can occur when a group of girls are working and studying together, not too aggressive, which can occur when boys are exclusively working and studying together. 1 There are less ‘sink’ groups in schools. 2 Different teaching styles are opened up, moving away from didactic methods. 3 There is potentially less negative labelling of students. 4 Teachers have contact with a wide range of students. 5 This form of teaching makes for diagnostic teaching. 6 Troublesome students are ‘diluted’ through......

Attending Co-Ed Schools Is Better Than Attending Single-Sex School

...Attending a single-sex school is not as beneficial as some educators claim. Both types of schools have their own social benefits as well as negative social aspects. However, it is evidently of more social benefits to attend a co-education school than to attend a single-sex school. The co-education schools play a major role in ensuring that social harmony between both genders is maintained. It does this through several ways. Firstly, the co-education type of schools helps students in developing vital life-skills. Some educators argue that single-sex schools are better because they give students a sense of confidence, which might be true to some extent. However, it is very important to understand that this kind of confidence is short-lived and of wrongly timed. The co-education system depicts a complete social setting and thus, students from the co-education schools stand a greater chance of learning how to solve their social problems like cross-gender intimidation and gender stereotypes, once they are out of school. This is the type of confidence that the students need. Unlike their counterparts from single-sex schools, graduands from the co-education schools will also have learnt how to behave in the presence of the opposite sex, how to relate at work, dating and forming friendships as well as how to communicate in an acceptable manner. Secondly, student diversity is highly hindered in the single-sex schools. Those educators who argue in favor of the single-sex schools by......

Better Teachers, Better Schools

...Better Teachers, Better Schools Imagine this. You are a high school student in class, listening to the teacher discuss the area of a triangle in your geometry course. You cannot help but look around and see, like you, no one else wants to be there. You realize that the teacher has no real connection with students and truly does not know how to communicate the subject material. You cannot help but wonder, why are they teaching? Shouldn’t someone that more qualified to teach be in their place? From kindergarten to high school, choosing qualified teachers has been a daunting task. Schools nationwide choose teachers based on their experience in teaching and an interview process that they are required to complete. Although this seems like a sufficient way to choose great teachers, it is not enough. Too many people are becoming teachers when they clearly do not have the proper skills to lead a group of students. Just because a person has a high IQ, had a good GPA, has previous experience in the education field, or has en education major, does it mean that they have what it takes to be a teacher. A teacher needs to have good interactions with students, be an authoritative figure, be able to teach material, and much more. Just conducting an interview and a resume will not reveal if a candidate has these qualifications. This is why the hiring process for teachers should be much stricter, including an exam and a mock classroom evaluation, in addition to what is already in place....

Single Sex Schools vs Mixed Sex Schools

...Single Sex Schools vs Mixed Sex Schools South Carolina has more than 100 schools that offer single sex education (Hollingsworth, Jul 08-2012). This leaves a question which is: are single sex schools better than mixed sex schools? This questions raises a conflict among parents when choosing the type of school their children will be studying in. single sex schools are considered to be a new way of education since it has always been mixed schools. Some people believe that this new way of education is better than mixed sex schools. It is believed that mixed sex schools improve the academic performance, social life, and psychological status of students. Antagonists believe that mixed sex schools bestow distraction amongst the students which further affects their scores and grades negatively. Some also say that girls feel more confident and less distracted in single sex schools which will make them able to score higher grades than if they were in mixed sex schools. After all, they were proven wrong. Studies show that boys predominate in science subjects whilst girls shine in culture-related subjects and language. This aspect grants both genders to be more aware of their weaknesses which further awards the opportunity of peer learning. This makes both genders assist each other and mask their weaknesses thus improve their grades. There is no evidence that a certain kind of girl – or a certain kind of boy – is more likely to excel in single-sex than co-educational schools......

Some People Think That Parents Should Teach Children How to Be Good Members of Society. Others, However, Believe That School Is the Place to Learn This. Discuss Both These Views and Give Your Own Opinion.

...A child’s education has never been about learning information and basic skills only. It has always included teaching the next generation how to be good members of society. Therefore, this cannot be the responsibility of the parents alone. In order to be a good member of any society the individual must respect and obey the rules of their community and share their values. Educating children to understand the need to obey rules and respect others always begins in the home and is widely thought to be the responsibility of parents. They will certainly be the first to help children learn what is important in life, how they are expected to behave and what role they will play in their world. However, learning to understand and share the value system of a whole society cannot be achieved just in the home. Once a child goes to school, they are entering a wider community where teachers and peers will have just as much influence as their parents do at home. At school, children will experience working and living with people from a whole-variety of backgrounds from the wider society. This experience should teach them how to co-operate with each other and how to contribute to the life of their community. But to be a valuable member of any community is not like learning a simple skill, it is something that an individual goes on learning throughout life and it is the responsibility of every member of a society to take responsibility for helping the younger generation to become active...
