BECAUSE U COULD NOT STOP FOR DEATH BY EMILY DICKINSON…. Type of Work “Because I Could Not Stop for Death” is a lyric poem on the theme of death. The contains six stanzas, each with four lines. A four-line stanza is called a quatrain. The poem was first published in 1890 in Poems, Series 1, a collection of Miss Dickinson's poems that was edited by two of her friends, Mabel Loomis Todd and Thomas Wentworth Higginson. The editors titled the poem "Chariot." Commentary and Theme “Because I Could Not Stop for Death” reveals Emily Dickinson’s calm acceptance of death. It is surprising that she presents the experience as being no more frightening than receiving a gentleman caller—in this case, her fiancé (Death personified). The journey to the grave begins in Stanza 1, when Death comes calling in a carriage in which Immortality is also a passenger. As the trip continues in Stanza 2, the carriage trundles along at an easy, unhurried pace, perhaps suggesting that death has arrived in the form of a disease or debility that takes its time to kill. Then, in Stanza 3, the author appears to review the stages of her life: childhood (the recess scene), maturity (the ripe, hence, “gazing” grain), and the descent into death (the setting sun)–as she passes to the other side. There, she experiences a chill because she is not warmly dressed. In fact, her garments are more appropriate for a wedding, representing a new beginning, than for a funeral, representing an end. Her description of the grave as her “house” indicates how comfortable she feels about death. There, after centuries pass, so pleasant is her new life that time seems to stand still, feeling “shorter than a Day.” The overall theme of the poem seems to be that death is not to be feared since it is a natural part of the endless cycle of nature. Her view of death may also reflect her personality and religious beliefs. On…...

Should Students Be Allowed to Have Cell Phones in Elementary and High Schools? Personally, I Believe Students Should Be Allowed to Have Cell Phones in Elementary and High Schools. However, I Don’t Believe Students

...Should students be allowed to have cell phones in elementary and high schools? Personally, I believe students should be allowed to have cell phones in elementary and high schools. However, I don’t believe students should be allowed to use them during school hours. It is very useful for a student to have their phone after school when walking home just in case of an emergency. There are plenty of kids I know that get scared to walk home but have no choice. There are also a few kids I know that go to a friend’s house without asking. Being scared to walk home seems strange maybe, but, I know what this feels like. Being on the phone with my mom or friend helped me deal with my fear and to overcome it. It is also very nice to have a phone on you when you are getting a ride with a friend. This is because you can call your parent and let them know to save their gas. It’s a win win situation at that point. If it were allowed for elementary and high school kids to have their phones, I believe there would be less abduction’s that end badly. The reason I believe this is because with the new GPS apps on most phones these days, parents can track their child as long as the child has their phone on them. My older sister has wondered off without my mom’s permission and because of the AT&T family map GPS; she was able to track her down. Some abduction’s I have heard of happened at a bus stop or while a child was walking home from school. Having a phone on them could have made it possible......

Should Searches Be Allowed in Public Schools?

...Personal Search’s at School Should the administrative office have the authority to search our bags and lockers for illegal drugs or weapons? Should the principal allow a search, while invading a student’s privacy? Of course, students attending school, while at school, should not be carrying such items with them. But, is a search really necessary? Would a search be benefitting our school system or simply a waste of a government taxes? To be brutally honest, I believe searches are a waste of time for our law enforces as well as a waste of class time. Now days, students take learning as something they must achieve in order to continue with a decent lifestyle. Learning affects your grades and grades affect your life, even onto college. Now, you’re probably thinking this won’t be a long search. Throughout the day, there will be lockers banging and dogs barking all though the halls. Distractions, I think, are one of main causes for non-excelling students. Also, you must think about the consequences of an inaccurate search. Suppose one of officers finds something drug related, such as an empty beer bottle. Does he have the right to obtain this and search further? If he does, and finds no trace of other drug relations, does the student receive some sort of suspension? Or perhaps, the officer abuses his rights and attempts to retrieve an item for an obvious suspicion. What would the student say when all of his homework is scattered within his locker? We all know how private......

Should Students Be Allowed to Use Mobile Devices in School?

...Should Students be allowed to Use Mobile Devices in School? Stacy Scott COMM/215 January 10, 2014 Linda Camp Should Students be allowed to Use Mobile Devices in School? Mobile devices have brought a whole new outlook on the world as we know it today. It can be used for entertainment such as games, movies and music; networking such as social media; communicating such as texting, face-time and Skype; organization such as Outlook; and much, much more. Mobile devices have allowed anyone who uses it to access almost anything they want or need like a pocket-size computer. Schools have already started to incorporate mobile devices in the classroom. This then raises my point that students should be allowed to use mobile devices in school. The first and most important reason I believe in this is a lot of students have expected or unexpected after school activities. For those students who have required after school activities, this activity may run later than usual, and they may want to let their parents know they are going to be late and why. For those students who have unexpected after school activities such as some extra tutoring, they may want to let their parents know where they are and when they can expect them home or when they can be picked up. This gives the students the opportunity to text, e-mail, or leave a voicemail message to their parents in order to alert them of these types of changes. It also frees the parents from worry and maybe even rushing as well as......

Disicipline in High School and Elementary Education

...Discipline in High School and Elementary Education Discipline in High School and Elementary Education Disciplining special education students is a major concern. Special education students have rights that clearly state the disciplinary regulations that must be followed. Therefore it is imperative that special education and regular education teachers are familiar with the many rules and regulations implemented by the Individuals with Disabilities Act (2004). As an aspiring educator, I want to ensure that I am well informed of and follow the rules and regulation for disciplining special education students. With that being said I had the opportunity to interview a high school and elementary school administrator. The following essay will discuss the details of the interviews. Interviewing Dr. J. Murphy (elementary administrator) and Mr. H. Hall (high school administrator) was a great learning experience. We were able to discuss some of the issues that special educators and regular education teachers have concerning the disciplining of their special education students. I asked each administrator various questions and their responses were very interesting. Interview Dr. Murphy, for the pass week I have been learning about the disciplinary regulations that have been implemented for special education students as......

Motivating High School Students

...involvement along with utilizing modern technology and cyberschooling will help motivate high school students to successfully graduate with their peers with a sense of accomplishment and pride. Though we cannot force students to want to learn and graduate we can implement new teaching techniques and technology that interests them which in turn will motivate them to want to learn. Motivating a student can be a challenge for teachers as well as parents therefore teachers and parents both need to create a positive environment providing a feeling of support and expectations. Studies show that many students do poorly because they do not completely understand what is expected of them. “Students who are uncertain about what to do will seldom perform well” (VirtualSalt). Teachers should spend more time explaining the subject, why the topic is important, interesting and worthwhile so that their own enthusiasm will be transmitted to the students and will therefore motivate them. It is also harder to motivate older students than it is to motivate younger ones. “The irony is that high school teachers particularly, and parents of high school kids, need to be more skilled at motivating” (USATODAY). Teachers can take free courses, whether through a traditional school setting or through an on-line setting, on ideas for motivating students as well as doing basic internet research. An example of teacher motivation that I......

Should High School Students Be Able to Get Free Condoms at School?

...Should high school students be able to get free condoms at school? I think high school students should be able to get free condoms at school because this can help young students to lower the risk of pregnancy and to protect them from sexual diseases. First of all, free condoms are the most efficient way to prevent an unexpected pregnancy. More and more high school students have sexual act and this is the true which is hard to be changed by education or prohibition from parents and school teachers. However, to give students free condoms can protect female students avoid unexpected pregnancy. Let’s image this scene that a teenage pregnant female student is sitting in the classroom. I don’t think she has the ability to focus on her studying and courage to face on the pressure from family and society. In addition, pregnancy is the main reason of quit school. Young students may not use condoms although they have accepted the sexual classes. Free condoms may promotes the rate about using them and lower the rate about unexpected pregnancy. Secondly, to offer free condoms to high school students can reduce sexual diseases. In some cases, some young students are very promiscuous which improves the probability of exchanging the sexual diseases. Therefore, condoms are especially important for defending sexual diseases. Students may not use condoms when they forget to buy them. However, the using rate will improve because people like the free stuffs according to the Economics theory...

Should Distant Learning Be Allowed in High School

...Distant Learning and High School Students Distance learning in educational institutions has become very popular in today’s society. This type of learning that has been implemented into the high school environment as an alternative to traditional classes for some students. It is precisely this situation that studies are being conducted to determine if high school students should be allowed to take online courses. Even though studies have shown distance learning in the high school environment has taken away the teacher/student direct interaction and inhibits socializing with other students, allowing this type of learning to continue may be more beneficial in today’s society because further research still needs to be conducted. The use of technology has made classrooms accessible via the World Wide Web and studies have shown some interesting facts about online learning in the high school environment. One main study showed that there were issues with technology itself and the lack of in-class discussions among students. Williamson, Bernhard & Chamberlin (2000) noted that in what they call “Far View Courses” that there were technical problems within the virtual classroom with audio and video freezing up. Advances in technology have reduced many of these problems over the past fourteen years. Back in 2000, the internet was slow compared to today. Multiple students can sign into class at the same time and are able to stay on pace with the lectures and readings. They also......

Should Cell Phones Be Allowed in School?

...Should Cell Phones Be Allowed in School? As society grows older and develops, technology seems to advance and augment with it as well. Many teachers hate the idea of phones at school. Unsurprisingly, the younger generation support the idea. There are several valid reasons as to why cell phones should be allowed in school. Firstly, cell phones can help salvage money. According to MediaSmarts who surveyed around 5400 school kids in each province and territory of Canada in 2014, they discovered that the majority of the kids in grades four through eleven had their own cell phone, while nearly one in four of the youngest children owned a mobile device. Having monitored cell phones in the classroom to use for schoolwork are very useful for teaching, considering many, many kids come to school which is not uncommon, allowing cell phone usage would make accessing the interest much easier and help schools save money. Not to mention, cell phones can help students be or become more organized. First of all, most students do not carry a paper planner or agenda. We all know that many of the agendas given out in the beginning of the year end up in the back of school lockers, at home in a closet or the trash. We need to incorporate their cell phones and or iPod Touch devices as their planner. That way, teachers can give them homework reminders, let them poll, and study using these devices. Having since it integrates with the personal calendar on the device, so students can be even......

Should Corporations Be Allowed to Advertise in School

...Running head: STOP ADVERTISING IN SCHOOL! 25 March 2015 Stop advertising in school “Teenagers are attractive consumers; they spend $155 billion a year, children younger than 12 years spend another $25 billion, and both groups influence another $200 billion of their parent’s spending each year.”(American Academy of Pediatrics, 2006). For above reasons and statistics cited, an enormous number of European countries, such as, France and Switzerland prohibit advertisement in school. Therefore, companies’ advertisements should be illegal in school for three reasons: parasitize the education environment, effect children vulnerability and contribute to children’s addiction of some goods. Corporations’ advertisement should be banned in school because it parasitizes the education circumference. One reason is that publicities transform school from a place of studying to a marketing spot. Based on research, “Nearly 80% of all public high schools, and 50% of public elementary schools have a contract with Pepsi and Coca-Cola” (Food Product Design [FPD], 2013). This point changes completely the real meaning of school, which should be an area of studying not for business. Another reason, advertisements might make school administration more interested in increasing their funds than focusing on their major activity which is student education. That is translated by the fact that, Coca-Cola paid $300,000 per year for school administrations in the United State in order......

High School Students and Their Allowance Management

...thing to sustain their everyday needs like food, water, and clothes. One can’t just go to the market to buy foods if he/she doesn’t have money right? It can also provide things for people’s satisfaction like gadgets, appliances and accessories. There’s an idiom in which it stated that “money doesn’t grow on trees”, meaning a person should be careful of how much money he spends because there is only a limited amount. However, there are ways on how earn it. What are jobs for? Earning money involves having a job, that’s why people are using their skills in order to find a decent job that will give them high salary and support his and his family’s financial needs. People of young age, especially teenagers, are going to school, learning many things and preparing of having a job or profession in the near future. In order for this to work out, parents are supporting their financial needs; they are giving allowance to them whenever they are going to school. In this study, allowance is the main topic to be discussed; its definition, importance, purposes, problems associated with it and the ways on how to resolve it. 1.1 Background of the Study: Allowance, or ‘baon’ as what Filipinos call it, is the money given by parents to their children and serves as their financial assistance in school. Since children are not prepared to have a decent job or profession, their parents are responsible in supporting their financial needs. As soon as the child is old or......

...Unvaccinated Children: Should they be allowed in public schools? Assignment 5: Persuasive Paper Part 3: Possible Disadvantages, Answers, with VisualsYour Name Lisa Teitler Eng 215 March 13, 2016 Unvaccinated Children: Should they be allowed in public schools? Today’s vaccinations are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in order to ensure their effectiveness and safety to the general public. Currently there are no federal laws which mandates vaccination, but there is a vaccination requirement per state for children entering school. The chart below details which vaccines are mandated for public school by several states: Children who are not vaccinated have a greater chance of death than children who received the required vaccinations. The safety of vaccinations is in questioned by many, asking if they are safe for children to receive. They are safe and should be required for children since those vaccinations help prevent illnesses, lower the risk for some diseases and it might even cause financial growth. There are several advantages of receiving the recommended vaccines. One advantage is that they are designed to put foreign antigens into the body so the body will produce antibodies to fight it off. The body will produce two types of immune responses when an antigen is introduced in order to ensure total immunity from the disease. Vaccines ensure that children get immunity from diseases instead of contracting them. Having immunity is a major......

Should Student Have to Wear Uniforms to School

...Should Student Have To Wear Uniforms To School? The great debate continues about should students have to wear school uniforms? There is no definitive answer as it entirely depends upon the persons beliefs. There are benefits for some children who wear uniforms and disadvantages to others. The main reason schools in America choose not to allow their students to wear their own clothes is because of the gangs. Having a uniform stops gang members from displaying their colors and garb. The schools also believe it helps stop violence and helps instill a sense of pride in the students. It also helps to break down the barriers between different socioeconomic groups. A couple different reasons why I think there shouldn’t be uniforms. First, School uniforms inhibit student’s individuality. Young people often express their feelings through the clothing that they wear. Uniforms will take away this form of expression. Why should school districts try to make everyone look the same? Secondly, A school uniform policy inhibits a student's freedom of choice. Schools teach students that our country is a free one. But when school boards make students wear what they tell them too-- it curtails the students' freedom. Third, there is the issue of cost. Many parents shop for their children's clothes at used and discount stores. Uniforms can cost more money than these families might be able to afford. Also, these students would need to buy additional clothing to wear after school and on the......
