Drinking

...lowering the drinking age to 18 because they believe it will decrease the binge drinking on college campuses and encourage responsible drinking, but others believe that lowering the age will cause an increase in risky behavior and that it won’t explain why us minors feel compelled to drink in the first place.” (Staff, 2011) Binge drinking is not only a health risk, but in-taking the much alcohol will affect a person’s judgment. (Radsch, 2004) Society needs to realize that there is an issue in America with underage drinking and whether they do something about it or not is up to us to solve this issue. Drinking is not a way out of your problems either, seeking help from someone else is though. In 1981 a group called SADD (students against drunk driving) adopted a new name SADD (students against destructive decisions) which allows teens to express their feelings about issues they have and resolve those issues. (Staff, 2011) Many believe that this group is a perfect way to help stop the increase of alcohol abuse and help the society realize what needs to be done. Overall society need a wakeup call to see what is really happening to teens. We can not ignore what is going on around us, but we can find a solution to the problem. National Minimum Drinking Age

This political coercion was necessary because this really is a states' rights issue because up until that point, the drinking age was determined on a state-by-state basis and ranged from 18 to 21. However, with pressure from special interest groups like Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) a precedent was established. The motives behind the 1984 bill were commendable, to raising the drinking age expecting to lower the incident of traffic fatalities and discourage irresponsible intoxication. Just one year later, Students Against Driving Drunk (SADD) was founded by a high school teacher, Robert Anastas, after two of his students died in alcohol-related car accidents. SADD is all about educating young people with prevention programs in schools and communities. It is the most dominant peer-to-peer youth education and prevention organization with chapters in middle schools, high schools and colleges. In 1997, SADD expanded its mission and changed the name to Students Against Destructive Decisions. According to some statistics, as each state lowered the drinking age, there was an increase in alcohol-related crashes in the 18 to 20 age group and that when it was raised to 21, there seemed to be a decrease the number of fatal traffic accidents for those in that same age group. The Challenge

...the hospital, I resented people telling me that I was an alcoholic. All the time, I was telling everyone I wasn't a addict, but all I wanted to do, was get out of that institution and drink. It is incredible how many different ways addictions can kind of find itself in front of you. I think the best way to avoid addiction, is not to drink at all. I found a way to separate myself from situations that can be tempting. I mastered the art of getting out of sticky situations that can tempt me to use again. I replaced the cravings, with different things. It is like filling the void. I am into art, reading and music. I keep my mind focused on positive things. I began to calm down, when i joined Students Against Drunk Driving, (SADD). SADD was extremely helpful, because it enabled me to talk to others who could relate to my story. In my final year of high school, I spent my time talking to other students about my life experiences with alcohol. I want my addiction and recovery, to be a lesson to other kids. All children need to know how drinking can become routine and turn into an addiction. Everything we have done and experienced, defines who we are today. I hope to continue to influence students with positive energies and experiences, to guarantee them a happy and successful life....

Social Change and Modernization

...Social change is defined as the transformation of culture and social institutions over time (pg. 479). Some features of social change may be that it is unplanned, controversial, or happen at a fast pace. There are four types of social movements. The first is an alternative social movement. This type of social movement happens when the change that is sought is limited. An example of this type of movement is the Promise Keepers. This group promotes a more spiritual way of living for men and for them to better support their families. The second type of social movement is a redemptive one. The purpose of this social change is to help certain people redeem their lives. An example of this type of social movement is SADD, Students Against Destructive Decisions. This is a movement trying to stop students from making bad choices, such as underage drinking or other drug use. Third is a reformative social movement, in which it targets everybody but is a limited change. Getting people to reduce, reuse, recycle, is a type of social movement to protect the environment. Teenage Alcohol Abuse

...communities there are sources of help for people of any age who recognize that they have a drinking problem. As obstacle for most people is admitting that they have a problem and need help. This obstacle is especially huge for teenagers, who often need to feel independent and in control of their own lives. There are many groups and individuals at work trying to reduce the terrible toll of the drug alcohol in the United States. Some are groups of young people who offer advice to their peers or raise questions about common notions concerning drinking. Varsity Athletes Against Substance Abuse is one such group. Another is SADD (Students Against Driving Drunk/Students Against Destructive Decisions), which focuses of drunk driving by students. Formed in 1981, SADD has chapters in high schools in every state. It offers plans for alcohol-free parties at proms and graduation. SADD also encourages teenagers and their parents to sign a “Contract for Life”. Students agree to call a parent if they or the driver has been drinking, or if they find themselves in other difficult situations. The parent, in turn, pledges to provide a ride home (Pringle 88). There is also the concept of the “designated driver” – one person who does not drink and is sober, allowing his or her passengers to drink but have safe transportation. Bullying can happen to any child ranging in ages from children in kindergarten all the way to seniors in high school, and can be done physically, emotionally, verbally. Bullying is not only limited to schools, it can also be done in the child’s home and where the child works. Studying the issue of bullying and how it affects human development is extremely important. More and more of America’s youth are starting to use drugs than usual. To prevent this, there are many substance abuse prevention programs that are in place to try and prevent this before it even begins. Three programs were examined for this research paper. Those programs are DARE, Partnership for Drug-Free Kids, and SADD. In this paper, the mission, funding and effectiveness of each program will be discussed. DARE DARE, Drug Abuse Resistance Education, is a program created to bring awareness of drug abuse with youth in communities. The mission of this program is to teach kids how to make the right decisions and live a drug free, healthy life. “D.A.R.E. is the national symbol for the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program which, in partnership with police officers, parents and schools is in use throughout the United States.”(DARE.org). The heightened risk of contracting a sexually transmitted infection (STI) in Canada and the United States is a growing concern, especially for young adults .Between 1997 and 2007 in Canada, rates of chlamydia increased by 86.8%, rates of gonorrhea increased by 133.3%, and rates of infectious syphilis “increased nearly 8-fold” (Fang et al.2010:19). Half of the 19 million new sexually transmitted infections (STIs) diagnosed each year occur in youth between the ages of 15 and 24 (Students Against Destructive Decisions [SADD], 2007) . The combination of high casual hookup rates and low rate of prophylactics use ultimately gives the results stated above. Increase indulgence in casual sex takes a toll on an individual’s mental health in a plethora of means. Adolescents’ involvement in casual sexual activity is believed to contribute to the development of a variety of psychosocial difficulties, such as lowered self-esteem, increases in depressive symptoms, and inhibited interpersonal/relationship-building skills (Buysse, 1998; Eisenberg et al., 2009).
