Frank Lin Feb 17, 2016 2-1 Last Thursday night at 11:00, Steven suddenly remembered, that he was going to have a History test the next morning. He started to panic, and he had not done any preparation to that point. The test was going to be on the causes of World War II, but he hadn’t even read the chapters yet. Worse still, he had missed several classes. He tried to calm down, while reminding himself that he was a fast reader. Before trying to read textbook, Steven knew he needed coffee, because the caffeine always kept him awake. He made himself a fresh pot of coffee, and he then added some coca to make a mocha. He didn’t want to drink coffee without something sweet to eat, so he looked for some donuts. He couldn’t find any, though, because he had eaten the last one earlier that day. He thought he would have to run to the near by grocery store to buy some donuts, until he looked int he cupboard and found some apple pastries - the perfect snack. Now he could finally proceed the studying. Finally, opening his textbook to start reading. Steven actually started to enjoy the material, yet it was rather engaging. He continued to read he didn’t notice that it was 3:00 in the morning, and he was getting terribly sleepy. The sun rose at dawn, the light woke Steven up, and he realized he had fallen asleep without finishing his reading. He wouldn’t be ready for the test! While rushing to get ready for school, he went into the kitchen to make some breakfast. He glanced at the package of coffee that he had left on he counter the night before. His eye gaped wide open, that finally he realized that the coffee was…...

Run Holden Run

...Run Holden Run The Philippines is already one of the most overpopulated and dangerous societies our world has to offer. The word “safe” can no longer be explained throughout the country because even the people whose duty are to protect us, turns out to be one of the biggest frauds and pigs our country has. The society barely even has any rules. This can be seen with the high crime rate and the wrong people we might eventually encounter in our daily lives. Crime arises by the minute and it is our duty to protect ourselves from the obstacles life has prepared for us. Holden sees the world as an evil and corrupt place where peace and happiness couldn’t really be found. He is afraid of going outside of his society and interact with different people because he sees the city as a dangerous place to be in. That is why Holden wears his red hunting hat all the time to keep him “safe” from the drunks, perverts and thieves he might face in his journey in Manhattan. However the red hunting hat didn’t really keep him safe, he meets people like Maurice, Sunny and he even suspects his own former teacher Mr. Antolini might have tried to do something to him. Holden like us tries to run from these strangers and challenges, he creates and faces in his life but no matter how far he runs he couldn’t really escape the dangers of his society. He cannot hide from the world that he must face. Just by walking out in the streets of our doomed society we should always watch our surroundings,...

Run Lola Run

...The film ‘Run Lola Run’ directed by Tome Tykwer depicts various themes associated with mise-en-scene. Each theme provides unique elements to the two major components of mise-en-scene; design and composition. Every scene is characterized by urgency, and by creating this mood, the film is able to convey a feeling of expectation through hinting at things to come. It is through expectation that, time, setting and character relationship are able to govern much of what unfolds during the course of the film. Time seems to be a major reoccurring theme in Run Lola Run. The film emphasizes time constraint with every scene. Among other themes, the effect of time interaction is depicted in photographs of future events to take place in the lives of the people Lola encounters. The attention paid to time is evident in the constant reference to clocks; and the scenes depicting Lola running around the city only add to the pressure of making the twenty minute deadline given to Lola’s boyfriend Manni by his boss Ronni. The fast paced music compliments the tension faced by the Lola and Manni and grabs the viewer’s attention. The upbeat music never lets the audience forget the main characters goal of coming up with 100,000 marks within the allotted twenty minute time span. One specific instance occurs when a close up of Lola’s face as she’s thinking about various people to ask for help cuts to a shot of a ticking clock. The sound of the clock along with a visual of her father shaking his......

CONCLUSION 20 REFERENCES 22 COMPLEX SENTENCES 1. INTRODUCTION The study of sentence structure is called syntax, and because there is so little variation in the grammatical structure of English words, a syntactic analysis forms the dominant element in a modern English grammar. The area provides the main point of contrast with traditional grammars, which because of their Latinate origins paid little attention to the syntactic properties of sentences. Syntax takes the central part of language between morphology (shape of words) and semantics (which deals with a meaning of word; what are they meaning), however, syntax is the part of grammar which treats of phrases, clauses and sentences. There are three syntactical units in English language: * Phrase (word); * Clause; * Sentence. A phrase is a syntactic construction which typically contains more than one word, but which lacks the subject-predicate structure usually found in a clause. Phrases can be divided into endocentric- when a phrase can be......

To Run, or Not to Run

...To run, or not to run--that is the question: Whether 'tis easier to race And face the harsh pains of a race Or to stay lazy And, by not moving, avoid pain To run, to hit the adrenaline rush- No more – and by running to say I face The early morning preparations for the events That each race day holds ‘Tis a situation I do not wish to face To run, to race- To fall perhaps too hard. Ay there’s the problem, For in running what events may come about When we are hiding from the finish line Must make us stop and think. That’s the idea That makes disaster of running For who really wants to face the 7 a.m. sun The first start, The runners’ obnoxious cheeriness, The disappointment in Gatorade, The team’s early practices, The overly chipper song of the early bird, And the cold looks That other runners send in my direction When they too may run On weekends free from tribulations? What would heed the team’s early call To sprint and jog through the first hours of the day But that the horror of something may be missed while running That unknown events that have occurred which The gossips discuss While we stand in a confused daze Wishing we had chosen a different sport Instead of seeking those futile adrenaline rushes? Thus the chance of missing out does make runners of us all And thus the bliss of running Is tainted by eye opening thoughts of lost news And peaceful moments of calmness and scenery With this regard their paths are cut......

Run Lola Run

...In the film Run Lola Run the flow of the movie relies heavily on how quickly the shots move from one thing to another. The editing in the first ten minutes alone conveys to the audience that this film will revolve around rushing around, going fast, and as the title suggests, running. The fast moving editing techniques are well used to express the importance of time and how it matters. The opening scene is an array of memories about what just happened mixed with the current time frame of what is happening. The arrangement of these shots and the pace at which they evolve helps set the audience in a mood of urgency and gloom. The montage sequence links the story Manni is telling Lola, showing it as a single, continuous episode. Each cut falls perfectly into line with the dialogue as it is spoken allowing the audience further insight to the story line. The editing done is very precise and builds to a climax that really pulled me in. The tempo increases and increases, building a heightened sense of desperation. Then suddenly Lola screams and the action comes to a screeching halt. A quick cut to a turtle crawling across the floor emphasizes just how slowed down everything just became. The sounds put each cut on another level of amazement. At the 5:08 mark a heavy bass, techno genre song starts to play quietly. Between cuts you start hearing a slight noise like something is rushing by your ear. The continuity of each of their voices as they go from their location to the others,...

...Sentence structure This guide explains how sentences are constructed and how different types of sentences are formed. It shows you how to punctuate each type correctly and how to combine different sentence types for effective written communication. Other useful guides: Using paragraphs, Using the comma. What is a complete sentence? Sentences provide us with the framework for the clear written expression of our ideas. The aim in writing is always to write in complete sentences which are correctly punctuated. Sentences always begin with a capital letter and end in either a full stop, exclamation or question mark. A complete sentence always contains a verb, expresses a complete idea and makes sense standing alone. Andy reads quickly. This is a complete sentence as it contains a verb (reads), expresses a complete idea and it does not need any further information for the reader to understand the sentence. When Andy reads is an incomplete sentence. It contains a verb, but the opening word when tells us that something happens when Andy reads; we need more information to complete the idea. When Andy reads, he reads quickly. This is now a complete sentence, as the whole idea of the sentence has been expressed. The following examples show the incomplete sentences in italics. The Sentence

...Running head: THE SENTENCE The Sentence Jose Guerrero Sentencing When criminal cases go before the justice system, it is safe to say that the elements of the crime have been established, that evidence supporting the criminal act has been presented and that the case against the defendant has been proven beyond a reasonable doubt to the jury who witnessed and heard the case as it was being presented. The presentation made before a judge and a jury will have an effect on what type of sentencing the accused might receive. Just like the prosecutor will the defense try to present their case with their own evidence and witnesses hoping to create some doubt in the minds of those hearing the case which includes the judge. In considering the criminal case at hand there would be some relevant information that as a judge I would need to have in order to impose the proper sentence against the defendant. First, I would like to know if the elements of the crime were proven during trial as directed by the penal code. Second, whether the crime itself was a misdemeanor or a felony. How much damage did this defendant caused whether it was monetary or personal damage since it deals with identity theft. Further, if the defendant had the intent to commit the crime and had knowledge of what he was doing at the time that the crime was being committed. Moreover, I would review the defendant’s criminal history to include whether he has been placed on probation or parole for the......

Sentence Fragments

...Fragments are incomplete sentences. The next few examples are not sentences, but word groups that are incomplete sentences (fragments). 1. After Starbucks Coffee opened. Several local coffee shops went out of business. 2. Several young people are learning old-fashioned dances. Such as ballroom dancing for the Nutcracker ballet. 3. The woman always wears pant suits and heels to the office. Then takes off her heels and jacket by noon. 1. After Starbucks Coffee opened. This statement does not follow through and complete the thought by telling what happened after Starbucks opened. Correct the fragment by adding it to the sentence that precedes it. 2. Such as ballroom dancing for the Nutcracker ballet. This word group does not have a subject and a verb, and it does not express a complete thought. 3. Then takes off her heels and jacket by noon. This word group lacks a subject. Correct the fragment by adding the subject she to the beginning of group of words. A word group must contain a subject and a verb for it to be a complete sentence. A complete sentence will also express a complete thought and it either stands alone or could stand alone. This is also known as an independent clause. You can spot a fragment because it will not make sense by itself. A fragment is less than a sentence because it lacks a subject, lacks a verb, and does not express a complete thought. The following material will cover the four most common types of fragments, with examples and......
