Today, the internet and social media are important in society, reflect the need for the human expression and recognition; these tools have become a key factor in the process of socialization. People need to be updated and present socially, and in the social media people share common interests such as music, reviews and personal preferences.

The Internet has become an indispensable tool for me in my professional, social and personal live but the use of new media such as social networking has some pros and cons:

Through the internet and social media, we can have access to information in a matter of seconds.

Thanks to the search engines, social networks, video conferencing, chats or specialized portals we can access discussions, reviews, opinions, photos and videos of other people and have asynchronous communication.

The use of the internet and social media eliminate the barriers of time and space; the internet allows us to have better communication with people from all over the world.

Private information can be misused to discredit a person, to act for criminal purposes and can also be used for phishing.

Although there are many reliable sources such as publications of universities and prestigious portals, also there are websites like blogs and wikis that don't provide correct information.

People miss the interaction with their social environment and his family.

Social media and the internet are tools that give us many opportunities but also many risks. The most important thing is to balance the positive and negative aspects and be aware of the risks that this can bring to our personal lives.

During the late 1960’s, this original Internet called ARPAnet and nicknamed the Net, allowed military and academic researchers to communicate on a distributed network system. The Pros and Cons of the Use of Internet for Educational Purposes

...The pros and cons of the use of the internet for educational purposes Starting out in 1996 as a research project, Google (a huge searching engine) grew into most users’ favorite site for searching the internet. Last year, Google made 29 billion dollars. That is approximately 929 dollars per second. Google is a good example for the age we are living in: we live in an age where we have access to more information and at a faster rate than any generation before us. There are both positive and negative side effects that come along with the use of internet for educational purposes. Keeping both the positive and the negative side effects in mind can help educators to evaluate whether or not their students should have access to the internet and, of course, to what extent. Due to sites such as Google, students can do research way easier and faster that it has ever been. I myself, for example, had not done any research in books before I started writing my final paper. This can be considered either as a positive side as as a negative side of the use of internet for educational purposes. Students have access to a lot more information by means of the internet than before. But this can be problematic if students are not able to differentiate between reliable and unreliable sources of information. Some sites do provide valuable good resources for students while others have lots of inexactitudes on them. Internet also allows contacting people. Students can now easily have contact with......

Cons of Social Media

...The Negative Side of Social Media BCOM/275 October 21, 2014 University of Phoenix Negative Side of Social Media There are two sides to every argument: right and wrong, and pros and cons. The side of the argument today will focus on the negatives of social media only. There are several cons to the argument of whether social media is beneficial; the nuisance of having to keep pace with changes, monitoring daily users comments, as well as some legal risks. Negative Side of Social Media Social media is such a strong trend in advertising and is often a useful tool for businesses to utilize, however, disadvantages also exist. When using social media as an advertising tool, there is the accepted risk of giving a part of the brand’s management and reputation to customers and employees. If there is someone that believes he or she was treated unfairly that person can use the social media site to voice his or her issues with the public. This negative feedback on social media can lead to loss of credibility and damage any prospected new clients of the company. Even if the company tries to remove any negative comments, customers may believe that the company is trying to hide something. There are so many social media websites that it can make it difficult for a company to decide which one(s) to use. If the wrong site were chosen, it can negatively affect the business’s success. The Impact of the Internet and Social Media on Activism

...September 29, 2014 Assignment 4a - Draft Final Paper The almost omnipresent Internet transforms our lives, connecting us to family, friends, and the world in ways inconceivable only a few years ago. Through social media, we actively participate in creating, editing, and consuming a never-ending stream of data. Private corporations and protagonists of political or social change all vie to reach and engage highly targeted audiences. Can a social media campaign be an effective tool, helping recruit people to volunteer and become physical participants in lobbying for change? Two camps have emerged, with one side proclaiming that the new world of Internet activism transforms and extends activism in ways previously unthinkable, and the other camp insisting that Internet activism entices a new but widely disengaged audience that can be motivated to a lukewarm show of hands but not to real committed participation as seen in more traditional forms of activism. This debate is widely known as the 'activism vs. slacktivism' debate. However, it is rather short-sighted to approach this very complex subject matter with a plain black and white approach when every single byte offers 256 shades of grey to explore. Gladwell (2010) argued for the slacktivism camp, stating that the strength of people's social ties is the key determinant in their willingness to assume risk in activist endeavors, because stronger social ties to other activists help form a group identity and reinforce the......

From using it as a means of personal communication, to establishing oneself in his/her professional career, it is becoming a critical part within the marketing field. The same concept is applied to businesses in that social media can be a source that establishes their brand image within their respective industries. By way of social media, companies are able to retain information about consumers’ interests, wants, and needs according to what they post on the various social media sites. Not only can companies use social media as an outlet to obtain information in order to determine who would want their product or service, but also as a destination to post special offers and deals based on the consumer’s social media trends. With this being said, social media is an essential tool for all businesses and corporations moving into the technological age of our society. Establishing your company amongst your target market is a great part of achieving success. Prior to social media becoming such a commodity in our society, companies would use traditional tactics such as flyers and print ad to get their names out there. However, today more and more people have become interactive with social media as an everyday source of news. Now a day’s people are able to access the New York Times through a website......

With the development of social media and the Internet, such interactions are rapidly shifting. Evidently, it is rare to meet a person who does not use this form of media to communicate with others. It follows that social media and the Internet have become an integral component of the life of an ordinary human being (Tardanico). For instance, Facebook alone has more than 500 million users globally. For the other sites, such Twitter and Myspace, the cumulative number of interactions per minutes is millions. However, the only legitimate means of connection between people is through the authentic communication. Studies reveal that only 7% of communication is reliant on the verbal and written word. The other portion of it is dependent on nonverbal body language (Werbach). This paper evaluates various sources to determine how developments in social media and the Internet have increased the level of human interaction at the expense of effective face-to-face communication. One Saturday evening, Annalise exchanged instant messages with her son who is a college student. They ‘chatted’ quite a lot, Annalise asking about his well-being and her son replying with positive statements followed by emoticons: hearts and smiles. That same evening, her son was arrested for DUI. A few hours later, it was......
