Philosophy of Music Education:
Why I Want to be a Music Teacher
Ever since I was in high school I wanted to become a music educator, music has been the most important part of my life. Although sometimes the classes were challenging, I know that my initial music classes prepared me to become the musician that I am today. In retrospect, being a part of the band and playing saxophone has always been a source of tremendous pride for my life thus far. It is that pride and sense of accomplishment that made music as rewarding as it is and I believe that the music teacher should do his/her best to share and promote this experience.
The Musical Environment that I Wish to Create
In order to give my students this chance to enjoy music as I have, I will strive to create an environment that is physically and emotionally safe for all students. Physically, I hope to create a classroom where the students are held accountable for the well-being of their instruments. Accountability means that they will have respect for the instrument, thus prolonging its life. Emotionally, making music causes anxiety in many beginner students and I believe that a teacher should be aware of a student’s comfort level and teach accordingly. Therefore, the majority of my music assessment takes place when they are playing with their peers.
Guaranteeing Success
All students need to feel successful. I believe that in the music classroom, the goal is to have as many people as possible playing music when they are supposed to and this means teaching at a pace that can be grasped by all the students. Part of guaranteeing success involves the daily implementation of routines such as set-up, warm-up, wrap-up, and listening to music. ...Personal Philosophy of Education I would not be considered your typical college student in search of an education degree. I am a 31 year old male, married, with two children, and working on my second career. My previous life consisted of working in the coal mines till I was injured. My injury, however, is considered a blessing in disguise. My injury has leaded me to the world of education. I have seen first hand the difference an educator can make in the life of a child; the child was my own son. My eldest son, diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, was unable to communicate. He had the opportunity to be enrolled in the early intervention program in Raleigh County. The first individual with the challenge of assisting my child was not able to fulfill her roles and think “outside of the box” to reach him. My wife and I promptly searched for the appropriate educator for him. My family was blessed when we found “Ms. Mitzi”. In the matter of weeks our son was able to tell his mommy he loved her. This impacted my life significantly and I wish to be able to pass on what was given to my child and my family. I chose education as my career path because I hope to be able to make a small difference in a child’s life. Time and time again I have seen children being educated poorly and/or not having appropriate role models in their life. Education is often times highly related to the country’s politics, personal values, religious belief and social issues so it is more than just teaching young people in a right way. I came from South Korea which is not far from Japan. ...Philosophy of Music The philosophy of music involves a study of basic questions regarding music, such as what music really is, what are the conditions that classify something as music (as opposed to noise, for example), how does culture influence music, how music is perceived as pleasurable and what is the relationship between music and emotions.
