Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to define my educational philosophy so I may better understand the direction I take as an educator. The three educational philosophies I will investigate are essentialism, perennialism, and progressivism. The revelations I hope to disclose by this pursuit of fully comprehending my own personal philosophy of education will help me become a better teacher. It is through recognizing what compels my teaching methods that will allow me to see clearly the path I am taking as a teacher.

Exploring Different Aspects of My Philosophy of Education There are three educational philosophies that I would like to explore deeper to better grasp where my own philosophy of education is rooted. I took the Inventory of Philosophies of Education and found that my responses to the questions lead me to determine that my philosophy of education is a combination of essentialism, perennialism, and progressivism (Sadker & Zittleman, 2009, p.186). These philosophies shape how I approach teaching, classroom management, group dynamics, and curriculum development. It is essential for me as an educator to understand what drives my teaching so I can better understand the methods I have employed to get to the desired destination. The first philosophy I want to explore is essentialism. Essentialism is an American educational philosophy that began “in the 1930’s as a reaction to progressivism” (Ornstein & Hunkins, 2009, p. 41). This foundation in the field of education is your personal philosophy of education. ...My Philosophy of Education by Richard Whittington I started my education in Robinson Texas, a suburb of Waco Texas. I began in the first grade at Robinson Elementary. They did not have kindergarten as part of the school curriculum there. As most of us, I continued my primary education until I graduated in 1974 at Centennial High School in Champaign, Illinois. What makes this journey unique is that I attended ten different schools for the twelve years of education. I attended the same school in grades 4 and 5 but I attended two schools in grade 6. I attended the same junior high school but different schools for each year of high school. It is the later that I feel has developed some of my philosophy in education. I attended the 10th and 11th grade at different schools but both in Memphis Tennessee. I attended the 12th grade at Centennial High School in Champaign, Illinois. The contrast in the curriculum in these two states were tremendous. In Memphis, in order to graduate, I needed 4 credits in English, 4 credits in Mathematics, ½ credit in Physical Education and ½ credit in Army R.O.T.C. (Reserve Officer Training Corp). When I transferred to Illinois, I found I only needed ½ credit in English, ½ credit in Math but I needed 4 credits in Physical Education. Fortunately for me I enjoyed R.O.T.C. and attended a full year as an elective. I was allowed a waiver on my PE credits because of this or else I would have needed to participate in two PE classes in my senior year. As I......

...My philosophy of education is rooted in my thoughts of what makes a teacher valuable to his or her school, specifically to his or her students. An effective educator is, first and foremost, someone who genuinely cares about the quality of the education in which a student is receiving. Memories of great teachers always involve teachers who put time and thought into their lessons and made an impact . There are four broad philosophical schools of thought that apply to education today. They are idealism, realism, pragmatism and existentialism.
