When she returned to the United States, the reception she received from Peace Corps officials was as devastating, she said, as the rape itself. In Bangladesh, she had been given scant medical care; in Washington, a counselor implied that she was to blame for the attack. For years she kept quiet, feeling “ashamed and embarrassed and guilty.”

Today, Ms. Smochek is among a growing group of former Peace Corps volunteers who are speaking out about their sexual assaults, prompting scrutiny from Congress and a pledge from the agency for reform. In going public, they are exposing an ugly sliver of life in the Peace Corps: the dangers that volunteers face in far-flung corners of the world and the inconsistent — and, some say, callous — treatment they receive when they become crime victims.

...To Whom It May Concern: This is a formal complaint of our experience with the RIU Palace Paradise Island. We checked into the RIU Palace Paradise Island on Thursday, December 10th, 2009 at approximately 3:00 PM. Upon check-in we were greeted by Front Desk staff member, Felicity, where she assigned us RM 804. Before we got into the elevator to go to our room, she stopped us and said she needed to change our room. After a few minutes we were then changed to RM 1202. Upon arrival to the room we were greeted by construction workers who were making repairs to the room, we also found another guest’s belongings residing in the room. While in transit back to the front desk, we were met by Felicity again, who said she changed our room to RM 817, and handed us another set of keys. When we reached to the 8th floor, we were greeted by a plethora of construction workers on the floor, in which we had to maneuver our way through and around them to get to our room. Upon arrival to our room, the first light to enter the room did not work, there were exposed electrical outlets, some questionable liquid white substance on the dresser where the TV sits, also various holes in the wall, in addition to the sprinkler being exposed, and none of the lights working in the room. We went back to the front desk to make a complaint, and they transferred us to RM 902. After retrieving our luggage from RM 817 and carrying it to RM 902, we found the door open, and were greeted once again by construction......

Complaints, as stated in the book, are ”statements about expectations that have not been met. They are also, and perhaps more importantly, opportunities for an organization to reconnect with customers by fixing a service or product breakdown,” (Moller & Barlow, 2008, p. 22). The surface message of the customer doing the complaining often comes across as abrasive and as an attack, but really the customer is willingly giving the company an opportunity to respond and fix the problem, or more appropriately put, giving the company the gift of a second chance. The authors of the book have redefined complaints as gifts, but to do so those receiving the complaint must learn to separate the gift from the medium, the complaint from the complainer. Being able to separate yourself from the emotion of being blamed is most important to being able to successfully handle all complaints. In other words, we need to stop taking things so personally and learn to portray confidence and consideration. This means gaining empathy for the disappointed and frustrated customer, all a while moving forward as a company. Letter of Complaint

...To whom this may concern, I would like to bring to your attention an issue I have been experiencing with my services with T-Mobile USA, Inc. Starting in June or July of this year, I began to experience a lost of signal on my mobile device, the My Touch Slide 3G. I was on a phone call and the call dropped. When that call dropped, I never received another signal and the phone would display “emergency calls only” followed by “searching” signal. I tried various troubleshooting options and even waited a few days to see if the coverage would recover before I ended up calling T-Mobile customer care. When I called customer care, the representative proceeded to have me perform all the routine troubleshooting options before they decided to send me another My Touch Slide 3G because they could not figure out why the device would not recover a signal. Needless to say, I received the replacement My Touch Slide 3G and the phone worked for a few weeks and then I began to experience the same exact issue. Overall, I was sent a total of 3 different My Touch Slide 3G’s and they all would eventually lose signal permanently. After the 3rd replacement lost signal, I called customer care and they then decided that it is not the phone but that it is the SIM card I was using. I had the same SIM card since joining T-Mobile in 2006. After receiving the new “4G” SIM card, the phone started working. Then a few weeks later, it lost signal again.
