...Microsoft Reports Loss After a Write-Down By NICK WINGFIELD SEATTLE — An accounting charge related to Microsoft’s ill-fated acquisition of an online advertising business led to a loss for the software giant’s last quarter, its first in more than two decades as a public company. Related * Times Topic: Microsoft Corporation But while that loss can be played down as an anomaly for a company that has been a reliable moneymaker for decades, weak sales in Microsoft’s Windows business cannot. Microsoft said on Thursday that its revenue from Windows fell 13 percent in the fiscal fourth quarter, which ended June 30. Windows sales looked worse than they really were in part because Microsoft had to change how it recognized that revenue because of an offer it has extended to people who buy PCs running Windows 7. Under that offer, users can pay $14.99 to upgrade to Windows 8 when it comes out in October. If Microsoft had not had to defer a portion of its Windows sales — $540 million in this case — its Windows revenue would have declined 1 percent, still a dismal performance that underscores the challenges in the traditional computer business right now. Sales in the PC market have stagnated as consumers have diverted their technology spending to more exciting technologies, including smartphones and tablet computers like the iPad. Microsoft and other companies in the PC industry are hoping to reignite growth in the business with the release of Windows 8, an operating system......

...access and find files (assuming they are organized well) and it is easier to back up these files. When using Microsoft Windows to provide file sharing, you will usually be using Server Message Block (SMB) to access Microsoft Shares or shared folders. Windows Servers can also provide NFS shares for Unix/Linux users. Multiple users can access a centrally located printer using print services, which means that you may share an expensive heavy-duty, or fast, printer that supports advanced options such as color. Printers can be accessed as a network printer that is connected directly to the network or through a Microsoft Windows server (again using SMB). Because the Internet has become more prevalent in today’s business applications, so has the use of web services. Using a web server to provide web services means that users can access web pages using their browsers. These web services may be used to do research, provide leads for sales, allow customers to purchase goods and services, and provide customer support over the Internet. Web services may also be used to provide an easy method to access databases, run reports, track sales leads, provide customer support, and even help you with payroll and human resources. Because you are using a standard browser such as Internet Explorer, you will be using the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) or HTTP Secure (HTTPS) protocols. Microsoft provides web services using Internet Information Services (IIS). is service inbound requests in......

...Microsoft is an organization that has been around for many years but people fail to realize how Microsoft has innovated its company and its products. Microsoft has several products that have innovated over time like the surface tablet, Microsoft Sync for vehicles and Microsoft office. Organizations like Apple Inc. and Amazon were ahead of Microsoft with the iPad and Kindle, leaving Microsoft to release the surface tablet. The surface tablet is a tiny touch screen tablet with an attachable keyboard, this tablet is more universal because of the Microsoft Office setting that is already installed unlike the iPad which makes business meeting easier and the detachable keyboard makes for easy pictures at a soccer game. The surface tablet does the same as a home computer and still works as an on the go tablet. Another innovation is the Microsoft Sync in which Microsoft joined with Ford to create a software that allows drivers to never take their eyes off the road. The Microsoft Sync depending on the package will allow the driver to answer calls, reply to text, play apps such as Pandora and receive turn by turn directions by simply talking to the software. Microsoft’s biggest innovation is Microsoft Office, almost every organization, college student and local business owner uses Microsoft Office to accomplish goals. Microsoft has made writing papers and creating power point presentations easy and fun. There are several innovation methods, a common method that Microsoft uses is......

...Microsoft Company Analysis Kevin Roberts Matthew Ponder Joseph Horton Strategic Management Arkansas State University Introduction Microsoft is a company centered around today’s constantly growing and evolving technology field. From company servers, to Laptops, even tablets and smartphones. Microsoft is expanding its horizons to keep pace with, or even out perform its competitors. Microsoft’s corporate strategy centers around their product being accessible to customers in many different ways. This access based strategy differentiates itself from other companies in the same industry, like IBM, Apple, Google, Oracle, and the like. This industry, that most people would just consider “technology” or “computers”, is divided up into several sectors. Microsoft obtains most of its profits from the sale of its enterprise software and licenses, making this their primary industry, while secondaries include, but are not limited to, smartphone manufacturing, Nokia, PC manufacturing, the Surface, Gaming, the Xbox 36 and Xbox One, and other software products. Microsoft is a corporate giant covering many major countries, but no company is completely flawless. They are actually projecting to have reduced profits over the next few years. This along with the software industry moving to cloud-based computing, open-source software becoming more popular, Windows mobile devices not taking off as expected, and hacker threats to their Operating Systems, are issues that......

Microsoft Surface vs. Apple Pad

...Case Study – Microsoft Surface vs Apple iPad Since its first introduction in 2010, Apple iPad has been dominating the tablet market. It is safe to say that the Apple iPad paved the road for the modern tablets. Nearly every company tried to copy the iPad, except Microsoft. In fact, Microsoft tried really hard to differentiate itself completely from the usual tablets on the market and compete directly with the iPad. In 2012, the company created a tablet, which can run both in tablet mode and desktop mode, and named it “Surface RT” or simply “Surface”. The Surface came with multiple preloaded software and the ability to edit Microsoft Office files. Microsoft Surface was without a doubt unique and unprecedented and had all the bells and whistles. Thus, one may ask, Why is Microsoft struggling to make sales on its tablets despite their versatility, features and smart design? What are the primary mistakes Microsoft made that had led to the Surface suffering in the Tablet market? What branding mistakes led to this current predicament for Microsoft? There is a number of mistakes or poor decisions that could have led the Microsoft Surface sells to suffer in the market. First and foremost, Microsoft missed the mark on branding its tablets. The name “Surface” used to be associated to an interactive computer table with a big touchscreen. Only few people knew of the existence of that device. Thus, after the failure in the Surface table, Microsoft decided to reuse the name for......
