Analysis of Leadership Style and Nursing Theory Effective leadership is key to life and success in an organization. Leadership ultimately brings success and the potential that is an organization and its people. There are a number of leadership and nursing theories that have been developed over the years, and trying to develop my own leadership philosophy is a bit overwhelming, I have thought about leaders I have encountered in my career and life in general, considering what I liked about their leadership style and what I didn’t. I find the Democratic style, the Transformational approach, while addressing Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Betty Neuman’s Systems Model to create the best outcomes for my patients and organization. Democratic style where the leader involves others in the decision making process, welcome others’ ideas, especially when considering they will be the ones most affected by the change. Involving others who are in different positions in your organization gives you input from the “front line” and gives you different perspectives and what challenges are being faced within the organization. The American Association of Nurse Assessment Coordination (AANAC, n.d.) points out the Democratic style can be challenging if there are a wide range of concerns or opinions and there isn’t a clear way to reach an equitable final decision. Changing Minds.org discusses using Democratic style you can get an insight into issues and frustration of your organization and also find out what others believe are working well, even though you might not be able to please everyone it makes others feel they are being heard, are important to the decision making process and can give you insight from others perspectives. ...Philosophy Similarities Sue A. Reed Grantham University Dr. W. Edwards Deming had a Ph.D. in physics and was trained as a statistician (Evans & Lindsay, 2014). At the end of WW II, Deming worked for the U.S. government and traveled to Japan to help rebuild their economy with his unique style of management (W. Edwards Deming Institute, 2012). The Deming philosophy never defined or described quality precisely. His philosophy focused on continuous improvements in product and service quality by reducing uncertainty and variability in design, manufacturing, and service processes, driven by the leadership of top management (Evans & Lindsay, 2014). Deming also believed that higher quality would lead to higher productivity and would then strengthen competitiveness. Joseph Juran spent most of his time as a corporate industrial engineer and did most of the writing, editing, and publishing of the Quality Control Handbook (Evans & Lindsay, 2014). Like Deming, he taught quality principles to the Japanese and was a principal force in their quality reorganization (Evans & Lindsay, 2014). Juran developed basic steps that companies must take, however he believed there was a point of diminishing return; a point at which quality goes beyond the consumer needs (Reference for Business). When your team see you actively engaging them with questions about certain entities within the workplace, they immediately feel as if you are making a genuine effort to obtain their input on important decisions. This humility in leadership shows that you are not too proud to ask question and to ask for help when needed. In 2011 I started teaching first grade students. ...Personal Leadership Philosophy According to Rost, leadership is an influence relationship among leaders and followers who intend real changes that reflect their mutual purposes. As much as I agree with this statement, I also have my differences. I would define leadership as a process dependent on interactive, “influence” relationships between people who intend substantial changes reflecting their mutual purposes. The essence of leadership lies in the process of influencing. Let's say that influence means one person's actions designed to change another person's attitudes, beliefs, values or behavior. Without influence we cannot exercise leadership. The process of influencing cannot occur without relationships between people that make that influence possible. I use the term “interactive” to show these influence relationships as being mutual, reciprocal and multi-directional. In other words, followers influence leaders, leaders influence followers, and peers influence each other. The words “leader” and “follower” are obvious by their absence in my definition.
