Returns as Parrot
The parrot in Robert Olen Butler’s “Jealous Husband Returns in Form of Parrot” is a symbolism of the husband. A parrot can only repeat what they have heard. In a way the husband is like this small helpless animal. He has no evidence of his wife cheating on him, “couldn’t quite put all the evidence together to speak” (237). Yet he knows and feels that she is indeed cheating on him. He just does not know how to handle it and confront her about it. When his wife starts talking about the man from shipping way too much “and right after the third time” (237), he starts getting more worked up. This ends up getting the poor husband killed and he still has no closure. He loved his wife deeply and maybe he did not want to accept the truth. Now that he is a parrot and wants to communicate he cannot. He is now realizing he wish he could say things” if I had the words, these are the things would say” (239). Would this have change the outcome of this man’s life? As a parrot and him seeing all the man in his wife’s life he is still in love with her. Not till he sees his wife’s naked body did his viewpoint of her change. He did not notice her as this beautiful person but sadness. Is this the closure the husband finally needs? I believe it is he finally gets to see his wife’s true side. He realizes he would never really be able to express himself as he wishes “I can never say what is in my heart to her” (241). He has learned to let go finally “I can fly there and think of things to do about all this. But I do not” (241). Birds are able to spread their wings and fly and be free. The husband can finally let go and become free himself, he can escape from what has been holding him for so…...

...can see some light coming in. In the cave there are humans chained as prisoners facing the wall and who are allowed to turn their heads and look around. They watch the shadows on the wall presented by the puppeteers behind the wall that stands between the burning fire and prisoners. The chained prisoners are happy because they had been fed by the shadows since birth. They have never been outside the cave and they don’t have the desire to go there. However, one prisoner with the help of a wise man like the philosopher liberates himself from the dark cave, sees the puppeteers producing images, and realizes that the shadows in the cave are not real. He also sees the sun which represents the ultimate meaning of life. Since the prisoner must return to the cave after his journey, the truth which he had unveiled is going to change his life. According to the Socrates image of the cave, all humans born in the society are prisoners who are chained by the society’s rules and regulations that everyone must follow. All puppeteers, on the other hand, are leaders of the society or government that creates those rules and regulations to keep the prisoners happy in the society. Their job is to produce images to the prisoners and keep them happy. As an example of the image of the cave in our society I would like to analyze fast food restaurant chains across America, and an increase in the health problems related to the high calorie food. Fast food restaurant owners are the puppeteers that......

Risk and Return

...Risk and return will be very central terms in our analysis and it is essential that the reader clearly understands the meaning of each term and how assets with different payout structures can be compared. General utility theory suggests that the average investor is risk averse. Given the same expected return of two assets with different risks, he would prefer the one with less risk. (This assumption may not be perfectly true for all individuals in all situations, but for the investor community as a whole it is probably true). For an asset with uncertain cash flows and payoffs, which are normally distributed, the mean of the distribution will be the expected return while the standard deviation forms some kind of “risk”. Choosing the “less risky” asset therefore comes down to choosing the asset with the lowest standard deviation in its payout distribution. An investor could also approach the problem from the other direction, choosing among assets with the same risk and then choose the asset with the highest expected return. Risk is usually defined as the volatility of returns, measured by standard deviation. The variance of a portfolio depends not only on the individual variances of the as- sets, but also on the co-variances between the components of the portfolio. As an extreme example, a portfolio consisting of two securities – a long position in a stock and with an appropriately chosen position in a put option on the same stock – will have......

...and Celebrations. Cadbury enjoys a value market share of over 70% - the highest Cadbury brand share in the world! Cadbury is the "gold standard" for chocolates in India. The pure taste of CDM defines the chocolate taste for the Indian consumer. In the Milk Food drinks segment our main product is Bourn vita - the leading Malted Food Drink (MFD) in the country. Similarly in the medicated candy category Halls is the undisputed leader. The Cadbury India Brand Strategy has received consistent support through simple but imaginative extensions to product categories and distribution. A good example of this is the development of Bytes. Crispy wafers filled with coca cream in the form of a bagged snack, Bytes is positioned as "The new concept of sweet snacking". It delivers the taste of chocolate in the form of a light snack, and thus heralds the entry of Cadbury India into the growing bagged Snack Market, which has been dominated until now by Salted Bagged Snack Brands. Byte was first launched in South India in 2003. Since 1965 Cadbury has also pioneered the development of cocoa cultivation in India. Do Dogs Get Jealous?

...Evaluating a Claim on Jealous Emotions Frequently, there are questions asked by dog-lovers, and owners, about their dog’s emotion and responses to certain things. Sue Manning took these questions into her own hands and wrote on two studies from Dr. Bonnie Beaver, and Christine Harris, on what they discovered when trying to figure out if dogs experience the same human emotion of jealousy (Manning, 2014). The two studies left the audience questionable but the professors were both after the answer to the same question, do dogs get jealous? As I mentioned before, Sue Manning took a closer look into these studies. She explained Harris` study pretty generally, stating how Harris worked with 36 dogs, videotaping owners ignoring their pets while petting and talking sweetly to stuffed, animated dogs (Manning, 2014). After reading this section of the article I noticed that Harris used a form of experimentation know as, naturalistic observation. She gathered data about behavior by simply watching and taking notes and not trying to change anything during the trials. She had to use this form of experimentation because of the number of dogs in her population. Most of my reflections were negative but some positive. My first negative response to this study is the lack background information she portrayed in her population. I feel as if, age or maturity level would be the first thing to effect the actions that the dog, or puppy, might have displayed. For if the dog was a puppy, or at a......

Notes - Jealous Husband

...FALL, 2004 Anne Lowenkopf Notes on “The Jealous Husband Returns in Form of Parrot” By Anne Lowenkopf Where does Butler find he ideas for such stories as this? I don’t know, and I’m not certain it can be learned. But I do believe the short story is the best medium in which to try. Seven pages is not much to invest. And, assuming you find yourself rewriting your attempt again and again, tenfold times, seventy pages is still less than a novel. Short stories beg for experimentation; they consume so much less of your time and effort. You could fit fifty short stories comfortably into the pages of a novel. But I think the inventiveness that conceived of this story isn’t to be gained from rewrite–that’s for polishing the story’s design and language, for working out its details. But its inventiveness–I think that comes from the chance observation, the wandering thoughts that come when one should be sleeping, the private joke that suddenly seems to have possibilities. Catching these fleeting whimseys on the fly and getting them down on paper instantly or as close to instantly as you can manage encourages the brain to make more. The doing is not as simple as the telling because what seems amazingly clever and daring in its flashing conception, often limps and drags as you start converting images to written words. Capture as much of the conception as you can; struggle with rewrite later. And don’t–here’s the most important element–don’t discard your limping words. Keep working on...

A Jealous Husban in a Form of a Parrott Response

...Being Suspicious “A jealous Husband return in From of Parrot” is one of butler story that I found really Hilarious. The whole idea about this story is this woman is unable to be relied on by her husband who later becomes a parrot just crack me up. Butler does a wonderful job with the humor in this short piece and using techniques like allowing the reader to detect what is going on without to much of the parrot revealing what happened in the previous life. The parrot talks to his wife once she has brought him home and the words that he does say in his little mind are only small words that he expresses what he is really feeling and considering as he is unable to fully communicates with her. On a deeper level I think that this story really touches on the power of the slightest words in revealing an huge amount of information about a character. This character, being a hilarious little mistrustful parrot, while a parrot he has a sense about what his wife was now doing right under his little beak and he talks about having the words in mind but not being able to conduct what he was feeling and thinking to make some sense of it. As demonstrated in Burroway, character can be viewed in many different ways, The way in which Butler chose to allow the reader to become more and more interested in the jealous life that were valid to his current situation as a bird. Although this story had a little amount of dialog from the characters we were able to see feeling in situations that......
