A technical survey briefed to local government leaders and representatives of Vedan Vietnam on December 7 concludes that the Taiwanese MSG maker caused eighty to ninety percent of the pollution of the Thi Vai River east of HCM City, according to accounts in VietNamNet and other newspapers. Vedan has reportedly refused to sign off on the report.

Nearly fifteen months after Vedan Vietnam was detected discharging large quantities of untreated liquid waste directly into the Thi Vai river, researchers from the HCM City Institute of Environment and Natural Resources (IENR), representatives of farmers in Dong Nai and Ba Ria-Vung Tau provinces and HCM City, local officials and Vedan’s top managers met on December 7 to hear a technical assessment of damage to the river attributable to Vedan’s operations.

In this meeting, closed to the press, researchers reportedly held Vedan responsible for eighty to ninety percent of the industrial pollution found in water samples. IENR’s Bui Ta Long said that water samples collected from February-April 2008 indicated that Vedan Vietnam discharged more than 100,000 cubic meters of waste water into the river every month.
The area impacted by Vedan-sourced pollution extended for ten kilometers along the Thi Vai river. The river in this area was heavily polluted. The water there was black, stank and was deadly to all kinds of fish.

According to newspapers, the Institute’s report states that at least 2700 hectares of aquaculture enterprises were affected by the pollution, some 2000 ‘severely,’ including over 2100 hectares in Dong Nai province and nearly 600 hectares for Ba Ria-Vung Tau.

The Environment Agency intends to convene another meeting on December 11 to unify official views on the extent of Vedan’s responsibility for the egregious and unprecedented environmental disaster.

The Thi Vai river is 30km long, rising in Long…...

...Mr Hung can easily realise that the absenteeism of Hoa and other members is only a symptom. It points to the problem, but it is not the thing itself ( Hoang, 2012). In this situation, Mr Hung can have two ways to solve. Firstly, Hoa was absent twice in five days so it is likely that Hoa might leave the company without any reasons. Secondly, Mr Hung finds out the causes to understand the absenteeism of Hoa. From that, he can give some methods to solve this problem. In the former way, Mr Hung will face some difficulties if Hoa leaves the company. He needs to choose the new one again and then it takes much time for him/her to be used to with working in the team. Moreover, Mr Hung has to spend time to train and introduce for the new one. Besides that, Hoa is a much loved member of the team so if Hoa leaves the company, it is not sure to affirm that the other members of team will love the new one. To sum up, it is not an useful solution for Mr Hung in this situation. Therefore, Mr Hung is advised to analyse the causes of Hoa’s absenteeism to understand why he behaved like that and then he can give some solutions for Hoa. The reasons for this situation can be devided into two main parts: internal and external. Now, let’s analyse some internal reasons. According to the concept, two weeks ago, Minh and Hoa were having an argument over the best sales method for older people. The change of new policies as well as the stress from higher sales targets lead to this......

Holocaust

...a great example of things that should not have happened or ever happen again. During the holocaust many people we able to witness many different things, such as hangings, burnings, beatings, and shootings. During a lifetime the average person doesn't get to witness these things, and never should have to. After reading this book about the holocaust I would recommend anyone who doesn't know a whole lot about the holocaust to go do research. The book talked about the child that got hung and talked about the burnings of Jews and the way they were treated. This is definitely something that I wish would have never happened, and hopes that it never has to happen again. I picked this scene mainly because I thought it was completely wrong. In the book there were three people that were going to be hung, two older men, and then a smaller child. That day they were called to do a roll call. When everyone was lined up for roll call they brought the three people up to be hung. Right then and there they hung the three people in front of everyone, they made everyone file by and look at all three of the people. Both if the men died instantly, but the young boy was to small to die instantly. He dangled for a half hour before dying. After reading that paragraph I hope you got the same feeling I did after we read it in class. This definitely had the biggest impact on me after reading about the holocaust. The way they separated families and treated people without really even caring one bit...

...of seats in the House of Commons. In common parlance, this is referred to as a ‘hung parliament, it is relatively rare for the Westminster Parliament to be ‘hung’ following an election; however, the probability is increasing due to the growth of third parties and the way that the electoral system translates popular votes into Commons seats. At regular intervals throughout the past two years, opinion polls have regularly predicted that the next general election is likely to produce a hung parliament. Although they are common in other democracies, hung parliaments have traditionally been viewed in the UK as unwelcome aberrations that produce short-lived and ineffectual governments. In light of the increasing likelihood of a hung parliament, the Hansard Society believes the time is right to explore what impact it might have on British politics. As a non-partisan organisation, we are neither ‘for’ nor ‘against’ a hung parliament. We recognise that all parties seek to win any election they contest outright. However, as part of our promotion of effective parliamentary democracy, we believe it would be prudent to shed light on the issues that might arise in the event of a hung parliament. Our new book, No Overall Control?, contains chapters by distinguished academics, politicians and commentators on the key issues surrounding a House of Commons with no overall majority. It examines the history of hung parliaments in the UK, constitutional and procedural issues, lessons from......

...Title: Mu Nu (Mother and Daughter) Artist: Hung Lui Medium: Oil on Canvas Description I chose to write about Hung Liu, Mu Nu (Mother and Daughter). The painting by Hung Lui in 1997; Liu used oil on canvas as her medium. The result is a timeless 80 x 140 inch by inch painting that is currently housed in Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Museum. The roughly 7 by 11 foot painting shows two women hunched over, ropes tied around their waist, strain on hands and knees to pull a heavy load. The point of this searing image, which calls to mind slavery and extreme poverty, is that they’re performing the labor of oxen or machines. The lack of shoes, tools, and simple cloths reinforce the depiction of poverty. The negative space is filled with a large, ghostly looking, shallow body of water and a crowd of earthy colored rocks. Analysis From experiences in China, starting at the age of five, Hung Liu used memories, sketches, and photos to create this figurative oil painting. Painted from a photo, the two women are depicted in washed-out grays; she uses shades of gray for the mother and darker more predominant colors for the clothing and skin of the daughter. While the background landscape contains more vibrant colors. She uses horizontal lines to create a pattern of continuation or beginning to end of a rock path. Rocks, water, as well as the mother to daughter stretching left to right on the canvas. There is also a rhythm of moving forward created by the raise...

...problem that exists with hung juries. It should be suggested that a supermajority be required to convict, and a mere majority be required to acquit. These reforms would effectively abolish the hung jury. We need to stop giving holdouts the power to prevent convictions and I feel that all jurors should not have to agree, only the majority. Presently, both acquittals and convictions must be unanimous in federal court and in forty-eight states. That's not fair to the defendant. He fails to get the benefit of a clear result that would allow repose, and he faces the risk of retrial, even if eleven jurors thought either that he was innocent, or that the government had failed to prove its case. (Ethan J. Leib 2006) A solution needs to be proposed to help in abolishing the hung jury. Overview of the problem Why juries hang at these rates isn’t clear. Some commentators claim that hung juries are the product of eccentric or nullifying holdout jurors. Most commentary focuses rather narrowly on the supposed failings of the individual members of a hanging jury, such as jurors’ inability to comprehend the evidence and the law, their unwillingness to follow the law, or their illegitimate refusal to reach a verdict. The experimental data recommend more complex and nuanced explanations. Based on their data, For instance, 10% of the cases in which the trial evidence was fairly close that is, it did not powerfully favor either the prosecution or the defendant resulted in hung juries,......

...Reverend Parris strolled upon his neice and her friends dancing in the forest. As the news got around town , many names were thrown around by Abigail and Parris to pretect her and the Parris name. Though many people were blamed and hung for "being a witch", one person I believe should not have been accused was Elizabeth Proctor. She was accused of witchcraft by Abigail. Abigail disliked Elizabeth strongly because she was married to John and Abigail loved him. Abigail wanted Elizabeth dead so she wouldn't be in the way of her and John. She never comitted a crime, she knew abigail was after her. "It is her dearest hope, John, I know it. There be a thousand names; why does she call mine? There be a certain danger in calling such a name- I am no Goody Good that sleeps in ditches, nor Osburn, drunk and half-witted. She was a liar and very manipulative. She lied to everyone about what happened in the forest and she named off people who had no connection with witchcraft just to save her own name. She had no remorse for anyone. She wanted Elizabeth to be hung so she could be with John. She threatened her friends and would not let them speak a word of what happened that night.
