PART 1 In this scenario 26 year old Bradley has involved his self in a non-hostage situation. This is considered non-hostage because of his emotions. He thinks his wife is having an affair with her college professor. Bradley is in the Pre-contemplation Stage in which he sees no reason to change and is likely to resist suggestions that he change. Validating Bradley’s lack of readiness to change by making his resistance normal; supporting his effort to re-evaluate his behavior and situation; and using reassurance, empathy, sharing commonalities, humor, being non-judgmental, and active listening during this stage. Kelln and McMurtry (2007) suggest that during the pre-contemplation stage the goal is for negotiators to develop rapport and to get the actor to recognize there is a problem. I think that this situation is negotiable, because Kelln and McMurty suggest that the negotiator use the following tactics to achieve the goals of this step in the change process: Validate the actor’s lack of readiness to change; encourage an examination of the pros and cons of their situation; encourage a re-evaluation of their behavior; explain and personalize the risk to the actor; identify and promote positive expectations of future plans and expectations; and show concern for the actor’s safety.
PART 2 Bradley’s instrumental demands would be letting five students go he would get some food, a bottle of whiskey, and a promise not to get any jail time. His expressive demands are being concerned about ranting about his service in the Iraq, his cheating wife and how much jail time he would get. I think Bradley’s instrumental demand is more important to his then his expressive demands, because he doesn’t want to hurt anybody or got to jail, so by freeing some of the hostages he believes this can be accomplished.…...

Non-Violence

...Martin Luther King once said that “non-violence is a just and powerful weapon; a sword that heals; it cuts without wounding and ennobles the man who wields it.” Nov violence is more effective than violent confrontations in the fight for justice, fairness and equality. The use of violence to fight for justice in most cases escalate to the point where the fighters remaining agenda is vengeance, victory and self-defense. When violence is the tool for getting justice, any moral arguments of the people fighting for justice are rendered irrelevant. Having used violent means, the opponent is justified to retaliate violently. The irony in all these is that each side of the divide is usually able to argue as to who started the violence (Miller 2005). The use of violence usually leads to the loss of innocent lives, the destruction of property, and in most instances, do not achieve the objective that it set out to achieve. Non-violence methods, such as those castigated by Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi try to avoid this trap by evading any violent confrontations. Far from being termed as cowardice, non-violence requires tremendous self-control, courage and a ready heart to endure pain, suffering and death. Non-violent strategies dwell on the strength that they reduce the moral legitimacy of those who persist in their use of violence against non-violence. ...The importance of non-verbal communication 1. Introduction It is quite usual to forget about many aspects of non-verbal communication when hearing this notion. In fact, what comes to mind immediately are body gestures or facial expressions. However, there are many more aspects. For this reason, chapter two begins with a definition of non-verbal communication and chapter three illustrates these definitions with examples. They also show the importance of non-verbal communication in daily life. In the following paper, the task of the interpreter is analysed in two steps: first, the transfer of a message from the speaker to the interpreter and secondly, the transfer of this message from the interpreter to the audience. The first step is discussed in chapter four, which deals with certain neuroscientific aspects of the process of interpreting non-verbal communication. It is also about the importance of face-to-face situations and shared culture with respect to interpreting non-verbal communication. Furthermore it is mentioned, which role emotional intelligence plays in the understanding process for non-verbal communication. ...A game theory consists of a model that can help us understand how managers, investors and other related parties deal with economic consequences of financial reporting. There are many different types of games, such as cooperative and non-cooperative. The model that will be discussed in this report is on non-cooperative. A game theory consists of an interaction between two or more players. Each player is assumed to maximize their expected utility (profit). Most of the time, this interaction occurs when there is uncertainty and information asymmetry. On top of that, the players must also take into account the actions of the other players when making a decision. The fourth slide illustrates an example of two players involved in a competition. Suppose that there is player A and player B. The actions of player A can be difficult to predict, since his action depends on what he thinks player B will take, and vice versa. Therefore, players’ decisions greatly depend on assumptions. A non-cooperative game has no form of negotiation and no binding contracts. This means that no agreement has been made on purpose. Crime it is a theme every country is focusing on to increase it. Because of crime the innocent people get hurt too. But can we stop this? Or is the killer instinct something there is deep in us? In the short story “Hostages” written by Andrew Vachss. We see a psychologist who is talking with a patient who is got affected by his childhood, because of his mother. But when the patient opens his feelings, something bad is going to happen. The psychologist is named Walker, who was a sniper in south East Asia. When Walker came home from south East Asia he became an police officer, but he was accused for ruining a raid and got removed from the drugs apartment. The first week on his duty he killed a dealer in a gunfight. But that was neither the first nor the least person he killed to guys wearing masks and one of them was thirteen years old. Afterwards he got sent to a shrink. According to the shrink he had “Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, fundamental lack of empathy, blunted affect addicted risk –taker” (p.157 ll.24-25). Later he was transferred to SWAT team, but because of his behaviour they pulled him of the job and took his gun away. ...Summary of Hostage: The story is about police officer who lost his job because of police brutality and became a hostage negotiator. "Hostage" starts out with a young man threatening an old lady, with gun to her head. This is where Walker comes in the picture. He is the main character in story. He's the lifesaver today. Walker talks a little bit with the detective who's at the scene, and tries to get some info about the situation. Then the story changes over to Walker's point of view and he gets some kind of flashback. The flashback tells us about Walker. It tells us about how he went up and down in his career. In the end it got so bad when he shot a kid without knowing, that he was sent to visit the department shrink. After sometime with the shrink, he wanted to see what his files said. Bad news. He had been stated as: Post-traumatic stress disorder, addicted risk-taker and so on. Since he had been a sniper back in Vietnam, they tried to put him on the SWAT Team.
