Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs motivational model
Abraham Maslow developed the Hierarchy of Needs model in 1940-50s USA, and the Hierarchy of Needs theory remains valid today for understanding human motivation, management training, and personal development. Indeed, Maslow's ideas surrounding the Hierarchy of Needs concerning the responsibility of employers to provide a workplace environment that encourages and enables employees to fulfil their own unique potential are today more relevant than ever.
While Maslow referred to various additional aspects of motivation, he expressed the Hierarchy of Needs in these five clear stages.
1. Biological and Physiological needs - air, food, drink, shelter, warmth, sex, sleep, etc.
2. Safety needs - protection from elements, security, order, law, limits, stability, etc.
3. Belongingness and Love needs - work group, family, affection, relationships, etc.
4. Esteem needs - self-esteem, achievement, mastery, independence, status, dominance, prestige, managerial responsibility, etc.
5. Self-Actualization needs - realizing personal potential, self-fulfillment, seeking personal growth and peak experiences.
Maslow's hierarchy of needs is often portrayed in the shape of a pyramid with the largest, most fundamental levels of needs at the bottom and the need for self-actualization at the top. While the pyramid has become the de facto way to represent the hierarchy, Maslow himself never used a pyramid to describe these levels in any of his writings on the subject. The above aspects that Maslow highlighted have been discussed in details in the subsequent pages of this research paper.

Although his parents were uneducated Jewish immigrants from Russia, they pushed him to excel academically. Without the approval of his parents, Maslow married his first cousin Bertha Goodman and they had two daughters. After studying law at the City College of New York, Maslow and his family moved to Wisconsin where both Maslow and Bertha attended the University of Wisconsin. Abraham Maslow received his BA, MA, and his PhD in psychology from the University of Wisconsin. After graduation, Maslow moved back to New York to begin his teaching career at Brooklyn College. During this time Maslow served as the chair of the psychology department with a German-Jewish physician and psychiatrist named Kurt Goldstein. Maslow theorizes that human needs are based on system of priorities. He uses 5 rung as in ladder or classifications, to describe the hierarchy of human needs. Keep them in mind as you attempt to send message to potential receiver. One of the many interesting things Maslow noticed while he worked with monkeys early in his career was that some needs take precedence over others.  For example, if you are hungry and thirsty, you will tend to try to take care of the thirst first.  After all, you can do without food for weeks, but you can only do without water for a couple of days!  Thirst is a “stronger” need than hunger.  Likewise, if you are very thirsty, but someone has put a choke hold on you and you can’t breathe, which is more important?  The need to breathe, of course.  On the other hand, sex is less powerful than any of these.  Let’s face it; you won’t die if you don’t get it! Maslow took this idea and created his now famous hierarchy of needs.
