GMO The foods most Americans eat today are genetically engineered in some way. There are many harsh side effects to this process starting with the soil. The chemicals also are harsh on our bodies as well as the animals that are eating them. Major us foods are genetically engineered some are , “86% of corn, 93% of canola, 95% of sugar beets planted 2008-2009 and 93% of cottonseed oil.” Usually all products that are not marked 100% organic are highly likely to contain a GMO product. A brief description of what GMO actually is, “While genetic breeding combines the DNA of two varieties of the same species, or of two related species by normal sexual breeding, genetic engineering removes part of the DNA of one species, then combines it with the DNA of a totally different species [that would never breed together naturally]. This is done by manipulating the biochemistry of the DNA during cell division (splitting of one cell into two new cells) and DNA replication (producing two identical copies of the cell’s genetic material). …For example, … part of the DNA from Bt bacteria, [is] inserted into the DNA of corn, to produce a totally new species of corn [Bt-corn] that produces the Bt toxin as a built-in pesticide.” Pesticides are sprayed onto crops on regular intervals throughout the growing process. One of the most commonly used pesticides is called “roundup” this is made mostly of glyphosate. The crops that have been continually spayed have mutated into super weeds which have actually become resistant to this super harsh chemical. How Glyphosate works is by disabling critical enzymes in the plant. “Glyphosate is a chelator , like the claws of a crab, it grabs onto minerals and holds onto them so they are no longer available to activate enzymes. These concerns center around not knowing what the outcomes of gene alterations will be. Even though it is banned in other countries, our government is still allowing the United Stated to continue with GMO cropping and without labeling it. I will spend this time today to explain to you what GMOs actually are, the history behind them, and the effects they have on us and on the world. BODY GMOs are organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated by genetic engineering. If the impact us health-wise it could be a very big risk to put these products inside of our body. One may ask, what is a Genetically Modified Organism? How is it even made? One popular method is called Recombinant GMOs. This is where a scientist takes two different strands of DNA and merges them into one . This will just entail a protein or two, but just that little bit of alternate information can alter the organism dramatically. The most common example of this would be altering a crop to make it resistant to certain herbicides. The benefit of this is that these crops will survive the herbicide while the weeds will not. This paper undertakes a comparative analysis of awareness of GMO food in Saudi Arabia and Ireland. The study combined a descriptive and review research designs with both qualitative and quantitative elements. Descriptive data analysis was done. Moreover, a SurveyMonkey was also used. A survey was conducted using a 15-questined questionnaire in a sample of 200, 100 respondents from either of the countries. The study revealed that only 2% and 8% of the respondents had adequate knowledge in GMO food in Saudi Arabia and Ireland respectively. The study also revealed that 61% and 57% of the respondents consumed GMO food in Saudi Arabia and Ireland respectively. Moreover, it was discovered that the media played a crucial role in creating awareness of GMO food. Analysis of the results revealed that awareness of GMO food in Saudi Arabia and Ireland was low. The difference in the level of awareness in either of the countries was not significant. Moreover, media was shown to influence awareness of GMO food in both countries highly. Currently, 80% of all processed food contains GMO’s, and because the standard American diet is 70% processed food, a large number of food items have GMO’s. Typically, all food that has been processed in some way is likely a GMO. The most widespread GMO in the United States is Corn, with approx. 90% of all Corn grown in the US has been genetically modified. The second most used GMO would be soy, as 93% of all soy grown in the US is gmo. In 3rd place is cotton, being 94% genetically modified. This means that any product that contains these plants or another product made from the plants, such as high fructose corn syrup and soy lechtin. Another GMO that is used frequently is Canola, as 90% of Canola is genetically modified. After an examination of my pantry, I found that this was in fact the case, as the majority of the items in the pantry contained corn, soy, or cottonseed in the ingredients list. Common items such as cereal contained both corn syrup and soybean oil, waffle mix, syrup, Doritos, Biscuits, Wing sauce, BBQ sauce, all containing a common GMO.
