Abstract

This paper provided an opportunity to take a deeper look into the country of Japan by conducting a Global Cultural Analysis. Throughout this paper the following four research areas were explored: 1.What is the major elements and dimensions of culture in Japan? 2. How are these elements and dimensions integrated by locals conducting business in Japan? 3. How does U.S. culture and business compare with the elements and dimensions of culture integrated by the locals conducting business in Japan? 4. What are the implications for U.S. businesses that wish to conduct business with Japan?

Japan has the third largest economy in the world. Having one of the largest economies comes with many rewards as well as challenges. Japan’s main reason for success is their culture. “Japan’s culture stems first from bushido, an ancient code that exalts loyalty to one’s superiors” (Emery, 2001, para.1). Japan has also been successful in part because of their superlative electronic and Information Technology industries as well as a very strong automotive industry. Imports and exports have been in instrumental in Japan’s success. “Japan is the 5th largest importer and exporter in the world,” (Japan Export, & Trade, 2013, para.1). Despite Japan’s prominent position, they have been experiencing major financial issues just like the rest of the world. Japan’s financial woes can be attributed to many factors to include natural disasters which inadvertently affect import and export ability. Japan’s ability to benefit from Globalization will be substantial in their recovery. This paper will explore applicable areas pertaining to Japan’s future in this era of global economy.

We often will make notes on our business cards, such as where or when we received and some important fact that we wish to remember about the giver. In Japan, it is unconscionable, to even think of writing on a card handed to you. Culturally, it is an offense to the giver. You must commit the name and title of the individual to memory in order to show good face and respect to the owner of the card. ...Global Assessment of Japan Bobbi Rieger, Chelsea Bergman, Sanam Amid-Hozour, Shirabe Yoshida University of British Columbia Okanagan In order to expand Webster Incorporated into the global market we have to consider which market would permit Webster Inc. to enter while allowing them room to grow as the competition is fierce within the faux wood industry.  Our team believes the most profitable option for a global market in regards to expansion would be Japan.  There are many reasons as to why this would be beneficial to Webster Incorporated.  Historically, Japan and Canada have had high levels of exchanges, all the while maintaining a stable relationship. Trade between the Japanese-Canadian markets has been approximately equal in terms of importation and exportation. The most important factor of this being that one of Canada's major exports to Japan is lumber. Currently, there is a trade agreement between the two; the “Innovative Japan-Canada Economic Framework” was launched in 2005 to maximize the Japan-Canada economic relations and cooperation (Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, 2011). More recently, in June of 2010 the customs administrations of Japan and Canada have signed the Mutual Recognition Agreement on Authorized Economic Operator programs. ...What are the trends in growth, inflation, unemployment, and debt? Over the last ten years Japan had a tremendous growth. It is no surprise for a country like Japan to have an increase in GDP among the last ten years; it had a GDP of $4.3 trillion in 2004 and kept increasing till it reached $5.96 trillion in the end of 2013 (Trading Economics, 2013). This significant increase in in the GDP is due to the increase in the net exports, since nowadays Japan is known as the world’s second largest developed economy. Japan exports a lot of automobiles because it is one of the leading countries in the production of automobiles that are spread all over the world. Moreover, Japan is the largest creditor nation while running an annual trade surplus. The GDP per capita increased from $29369.49 in 2004 to $31425.49 in 2013 (Trading Economics, 2013) meaning that the economy is vigorous since people are earning more so they have more disposable income to spend which vitalities the economy and the services thus leading the economy to thrive. All these conditions led the growth rare to increase from 0.1% in 2004 to 0.3% in 2013 (Trading Economics), however it is still considered low since it only increase 0.2%.
