Cornelious ------------------------------------------------- July 3, 2013 Gender and Sex Worksheet Answer the following questions in 50 to 150 words each. Provide citations for all the sources you use. What is gender? What is sex in biological terms? Are gender and sex the same thing? Explain why or why not? According to Schaefer (2013), “Gender roles are society’s expectations of the proper behavior, attitudes, and activities of males and females” (p. 349). The World and Health Organization (2013) defines sex as “biological characteristics which define humans as female or male.” Gender and sex are similar but they are not the same thing. I say this because a person can have the sexual characteristics of a man but still have the gender of a woman (e.g. transgender). According to Lesbian & Gay Community Services Center, Inc. (2013),”Transgender, at its most basic level, is a word that applies to someone who......

Eth 125 Week 4 Religious and Ethnic Diversity

...Religious and Ethnic Diversity ETH 125 University of Phoenix Mormonism is a uniquely American religion, have been founded by Joseph Smith Jr., of New York ("The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints", 2013). Mormonism originated in the 1820s, as described by the Church’s website, when Joseph Smith Jr. was confused and frustrated by the various Christian religions and was unable to choose one to follow. He turned to the Bible, which told him to ask God when he lacked wisdom. So he prayed to God, and was visited by the Heavenly Father and his Son, Jesus Christ. According to one of the members of the governing body of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Bruce McConkie (1958), “Mormonism is indistinguishable from Christianity”. However, there are some distinct differences between Mormonism and other Christian religions, and other religions in general. These differences have led to a history of discrimination and persecution, so much though that the Church today keeps many of its ceremonies, practices, and beliefs private. The Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-Day Saints has had a vast impact on American culture which includes a recent Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney. The differences between Mormonism and Christianity are subtle. Mormons believe that their Church is the “True Church of Christ”. According to their scripture study publications, the Christian religion became corrupted during “The Great Apostasy” shortly after Christ’s death and......

Eth 125 Week 7 Assignment

...| Gender and Sexuality Essay | ETH 125 | | Codi Pragacz | 11/15/2012 | | Women and members of the GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender) community have had many of the same struggles throughout history. Each group has had rights taken away, progresses in liberations for their individual groups, as well as setbacks for their groups. GLBT people have been noticed as their own group for a shorter amount of time than women groups have but are none the less important. It is generally seen that the gay rights movement that we currently see was started up in the 1980’s because of the emergence of aides and it was an international conclusion that aides was a disease brought about by the homosexual community. The activists involved in defending the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities united to form a stronger front against the discrimination they faced. Traditionally the more masculine men have been seen as a more rough, emotionally disconnected and aggressive image whereas femininity has been viewed more as timid, overly sensitive, submissive, and weak. Throughout history women have taken the necessary steps to fight this image and have become seen as more assertive, independent and ambitious. While conversely today it is more acceptable for men to be more emotionally in tune, more concerned with personal appearance, and more willing to be a partner to rather than in charge of their female counter parts. Of course, there are certain people...

So, your sex as male or female in the biological fact is usually the same in any culture but, what that sex means in terms of your gender role as a 'man' or a 'woman' can be different in your cultural or beliefs. How do gender and sex contribute to the concepts and constructions of masculinity and femininity? Men are often viewed as masculine and women as feminine. Although these roles can be reversed, but used to be highly frowned upon and made fun of by most people. These days people are more open to the to others that reverses roles but there still are people that don’t agree with it. Do our concepts of gender and sex contribute to the ways we embrace gender and sex in diversity? I thinks the concepts of gender and sex definetly contributes. My concept personally is that men should be men (masculine) and women should be women (feminine). I don’t completely agree with men being feminine completely. I don’t think cross dressers are allowed. I am okay for the most part with gay people and expressing themselves to a point, but I think when it comes to guys wearing dresses and getting implants. I think that is way to far and not okay. Do our concepts of gender and sex contribute to our understanding of sexual orientation? Explain. I believe it does contribute to our outstanding. Eth/125 Diversity Final

...Individual Final ETH/125 Diversity can be such a broad and interesting topic. Often when one mentions diversity they think of the different racial groups that they encounter on a daily basis. The United States, the country we call home, is one of the most diverse countries ever. Some people may not see all the diversity because they do not understand or are not willing to understand, or maybe they are just too busy with their daily lives. But if everyone was to just pay attention to the things they encounter and the people they interact with, they could really learn a lot. Since taking this class I have learned so much about the struggles that different cultures are faced with and it is so disturbing because it is something that they cannot even change, it is just who they are. Since our country is so diverse and we have so much “different”, we certainly have a lot of prejudice and discrimination that we need to work on. Some people would say it is because they are comfortable with their ways; I say it is just fear and ignorance. Growing up I lived in Elk Grove, California. It was a somewhat smaller town at the time and mostly consisted of Caucasian Americans. I am half Caucasian, or a mix of Italian and German, and my other half is Ecuadorian; Quito, Ecuador in South America. I was blessed enough to have an open hearted family where I never even knew what racism was until I started to see it first hand in school. In high school is where I really saw stereotyping and......

Eth/125 Week 7 Sex and Gender

...Week Seven: Sex and Gender Worksheet ETH/125 Week Seven: Sex and Gender Worksheet Answer the following questions in 50 to 150 words each. Provide citations for all the sources you use. What is gender? What is sex in biological terms? Are gender and sex the same thing? Explain why or why not? According to World Health Organization (2014), “‘Gender’ refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviours, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women” (para.3). Gender is in fact a social construct, designed to allow us to categorize and identify people by a group of emotional traits, behaviors, and stereotypes. These groups are often assumed to correspond with physical characteristics such as long or short hair, pectoral muscles or breasts, or penis or vagina. Biologically, sex is the possession of male and female reproductive organs, or more specifically, XX chromosomes for women and XY chromosomes for men. According to World Health Organization (2014), “Some examples of sex characteristics: women menstruate while men do not, men have testicles while women do not, women have developed breasts that are usually capable of lactating, while men have not, and men generally have more massive bones than women” (para.2). Clearly, once defined gender and sex are as different as men and women, black and white, and all the gray areas in between. A biologically physical male can exhibit feminine traits and identify with the feminine......

Week 7 Assignment Eth/125

...ETH/125 05/06/2012 Debra Bloom Appendix H Women have been looked at as the naturally weaker then the men. Domestic chores is what women were put to do as a job. Men were to keep to the heavy work such as hunting and plowing in labor. Women are taught to care for the children they beard, cook and clean for the household. In laws around the world women were allowed to make contracts, own land, and be sued by others if unmarried. A women who became married gave up everything to her husband, even her name. During the history the men effectively owned his wife and the children as material possessions. Two women, Elizabeth Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, who were temperance and antislavery advocates formed the National Women Suffrage Association (NWSA) in New York in 1869. Another women, Lucy Stone, organized American Women Suffrage Association (AWSA) in Boston at the same time. As women start to become leaders in the professional world, they have also jobs once regarded as too physically strenuous. Women have become coal miners, fire fighters and police officers. As they advance professionally, so do their self image. In the professions there are more opportunities. There seems to be a "glass ceiling" a level which women do not rise. Women were, however, paid much less for such work than men, and their economic "value" decreased. It took many decades of determination for the legal reform to end the discrimination against women. Femininity is changing, girls are less......
