The article “Student Effort in and Perceived Benefits from Undergraduate Research” by
N. Salsman went into detail concerning a study that was led by students preforming research projects and how their research was beneficial to their overall learning experience. It specified that the longer students spent on a research assignment the more in depth and organizational sound the assignment became, while an assignment that had such a small amount of research involved was not as good.
Students’ effort matters significantly when it comes to undergraduate research because of the quality of content that is presented in the final assignment. The results give to the body of literature by showing a positive relationship among student effort and benefits of a relationship between student effort and teacher effort was established. So the findings support the current trends of increased emphasis on undergraduate research across the board in higher education institutions, and suggest that heavy duty involvement may be most beneficial for students. There are many benefits associated with undergraduate research.

The research

experience extends beyond simply working in a laboratory, and also includes communicating the results of that research in presentations and writing. Engaging in research deepens and broadens

a student’s experience and knowledge in their chosen field, while developing those problemsolving skills that all potential employers are looking for in their applicants. As stated in the article, the results of their undergraduate survey…...

The mobile data trend (smart-phones, tablets, etc.) and “cloud computing” (subscription-based or pay-per-use services like apps and data storage) mean companies that scaled back I.T. departments in the 2008 economic downturn are hiring again. This is good for anyone in this particular IT field and shows a trend for future growth. In the next few paragraphs I will discuss current pay rates and projected job growth of this industry over the next 8 years. Prospects should be best for applicants who have an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree in computer science and are up to date on the latest technology. The amount of education a person has in this field will greatly improve his chances at receiving a higher salary then those with less training. There are many aspects to this field and the jobs available can......

...Project Part 3 Michael Sherman EN1420 For a working woman, maternity leave is a standard part of giving birth. Physically, the new mother needs that time to recover from the birthing process, but there is an emotional reason, too. Experts preach over and over that for those first few weeks of a baby’s life, it needs the interaction and touch of its mother to help with bonding to start their development on the right track. Shouldn’t the father be part of that process as well? Shouldn’t the father of the new child be able to take paternity leave from work? Some people have a stigma that the mother is the one responsible for raising the child from birth. I respectfully disagree. I believe the father should be as much a part of a baby’s first weeks as the mother. Why should a father be robbed of the intimate bonding time with his child just because he didn’t physically give birth to them? I feel this would help the father take better care of the child when the mother returns to work, especially if the father is home at different times than the mother. Having time at home bonding with their father will help the child recognize him when their mother is not around and put them at ease. Studies have also shown that fathers who are home on paternity leave are more likely to be directly involved......

...1. What are the five elements in the rhetorical situation? Use TRACE to help you remember. * Text * Reader * Author * Constraints * Exigence 2. How can a reader use the rhetorical situation to analyze an argument essay? How can a viewer use the rhetorical situation to analyze an image? How can a writer use the rhetorical situation during the planning phase of writing a paper? They can all use TRACE to analyze all of those objects. 3. Why is the audience important in argument? What types of positions might an audience initially hold? What possible outcomes are associated with arguments directed to each of these audiences? The audience is important because without the audience you have no argument. You’re trying to convince people of your beliefs, hence why you need an audience. The audience may initially be a friendly audience, an undecided audience, a neutral audience, a hostile audience, an unfamiliar audience, or a linked audience. Possible outcomes are convincing people to your cause, pushing people away from your cause to the opposing side, people could remain bias, and people could become angry and/or violent towards you and your argument. 4. What is a discourse community? To what discourse communities do you belong? How does a discourse community help establish common ground for its members? A discourse community is a group of people who share a set of discourses, understood as basic values and assumptions, and ways of communicating about those...

...EN1420: Module 3 Identifying, Organizing, and Analyzing Your Sources Exercise 3.1: Identify the Logical Fallacies Each statement below contains a logical fallacy. Identify the fallacy and briefly explain, in one or two sentences, why it is an error in reasoning. 1. Mabel is not qualified to lead the school board because she used to drink liquor in her 20s. • Ad hominem: committed by attacking the person who's making an argument, rather than the argument itself. One of the most common fallacies, it is a direct attack on a person's character rather than focusing on his or her arguments. Stating that Mabel used to drink that why she is not qualified it a person attack. 2. A child can be either an athlete or a good student. • Either/Or: An oversimplification that assumingly reduces several alternatives to a mere binary opposition, basically means you only have two choices. You only have two choices of being a athlete or a good student. You can choose to be bad student if you wanted. 3. Any change in health care will lead to socialism; we don’t want to live in a socialist country, so we can’t reform health care. • Slippery Slope (Bad Precedent): assuming that a proposed step will set off an uncontrollable chain of undesirable events. Changing health will lead to socialism is an extreme statement. 4. All teenagers text while they drive; therefore, we should raise the driving age to 21. • Hasty Generalization: drawing conclusions from too little of evidence and often......

...James Shanks EN1420 Final Paper The Hidden Costs of Green Energy In this day of steadily rising energy costs, increasing difficulty in finding readily accessible supplies of non-renewable resources, aging power production and transport facilities and environmental awareness individuals, local government and private utilities are turning towards renewable energy resources at an increasing rate. Many of these entities tout the benefit of their decisions as “green” and “environmentally friendly”. The real cost of these projects is often ignored completely either through true ignorance of the facts or in an attempt to be duplicitous about the damage that is really being done. In 2013 4,751 MW of new photovoltaic (PV) capacity was installed representing a 41 percent increase in deployment over installation levels in 2012 (Solar Industry Data, 2014). While this might mean a reduction in non-renewable resources (referred to as NRR’s going forward) burned, it also represents a drastic increase in the use and production of numerous toxic chemicals that result from the PV manufacturing process. According to Dustin Mulvaney, Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies at San Jose State University, the production of PV panels begins with the creation of Silicon wafers, a process that uses and/or produces sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide both of which are known as caustic chemicals that can be dangerous to the eyes, lungs and skin. As the production process......

En1420 Analyzing Fallacies. Online

...What type of fallacies do you detect? In this picture there are many fallacies I detected, some more apparent than others. The first being the “Red Herring” witch states the claim provides unrelated and misleading support for said claim. Being a circular reasoning argument it easy to see why this fallacy fits. I’ve seen this type of logic first hand, were I could propose a fact from a creditable source and another person retorts with a wild claim like “Because GOD said so/did it.” Not backing said claim with proof (Using this circular reasoning as a defense.) One other type of fallacy I can see that fits this criteria is the “Stacked Evidence” witch represents only one side of an issue not acknowledging the other side. I see this fallacy to fit this example because, when arguing with a pro-monotheist person it’s hard to even propose any other way of thinking because it goes against their way of life, and they don’t want to hear anything to penetrate their own outlook on life. What, specifically, makes them flawed or faulty? In my own option I believe that reading a book that’s been rewritten multiple times down past many years, and the person can pick and choose what they want follow and practice is dumb-founding to me. To think that praying to an invisible man will make your life better is stupid. (In my opinion.) In what ways do these changes make the argument stronger? One major way people can change this way of think is to INFORM people to the facts of how...

...Tattoos or body piercings–cultural and ethnic issues (Vero, 2014) (SweedishFeesh, 2014) In this day and age, people with tattoos are looked upon negatively. People care more about their spot in society than anything else, so if society looks down on tattoos, then so will everyone else. Today many ordinary people have tattoos and or body piercings. However, many people perceive tattoos and piercings to be only for gang members, prisoners, troublemakers, low lives, and bikers. Now, since more and more mainstream people are getting tattoos and piercings, more conservative people who are against them are now shunning those people from society. Tattoos and piercings are a particularly offensive subject when dealing with women who are getting tattoos and piercings. They are especially judged and are considered trashy, tacky, and even to the extent of being promiscuous. Why are people so negative towards people with tattoos and piercings? It is art and causes no harm. However, there are many people who still view tattoos as a sign of rebellion and refuse to accept that a well educated grown man or woman can express themselves through owning a tattoo or piercing. Even people who are not mainstream people and do fall into the stereotypes face harsher criticism and downgrading. People tend not to trust them, feel afraid of them, or look down upon them. Even though yes, some people with tattoos and piercings usually don’t want to fit in to society. They purposely desired...

En1420 Module 2analysis

...EN1420 Module 2 analysis The article was about a mom having to answer a question from her daughter concerning why a classmate had two moms instead of a mom and a dad and a book that could’ve helped the mom explain it a bit better. While the mother/author was able to both answer and evade the question, and the child accepted the answer, the mother notes that the book mentioned would’ve helped her greatly. 1. A. The claim or thesis for this article is that parents need to be more ready to answer questions posed by their children concerning same-sex couples. B. I agree with this claim entirely, as while some family are the ‘traditional’ family unit (mother/father/child) there are families that have multiple parents of the same gender and children are going to ask about it. 2. A. The warrant or assumption this piece made was that all parents are going to be as accepting of their children knowing another child with same-sex couples. B. The backing for this warrant or assumption is that the author states “you can choose to acknowledge differences and to show respect for love and kindness as Tango does or you can choose to act like a bird of a different feather. It’s called an ostrich.” C. Yes and no. The warrant mentions God, which implies Christianity, which has been one of the loudest groups against same-sex couples. 3. A. The supports for evidence for the claim are as follows. i. the entire article, for starters, it’s about the author’s daughter asking about same......

...The New Face of Terrorism “ISIS EN1320 2/11/2015 “ISIS” it is an acronym for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. In recent years it was over shadowed by its extremist predecessor whom it was born from this brutal sanction. The cold blooded brutal execution of westerners has dominated the news. They have rampage and killed innocent unarmed civilians causing them to flee from their homes because they didn’t ascribe to their extremist interpretations. So where did ISIS come from? They can be traced back to the terrorist group Al Qaeda, this Sunni faction was weakened by a U.S invasion in 2006 by American airstrikes. The group was diminished in 2007. This was the turning point and the awakening of a large alliance known as the Sunni awakening. The same Sunni tribes that had fought against the jihadist group (the term is defined as fight, battle; jihad, holy war) they used this as an opportunity to expanded their ranks, and regain power from the Syrian conflict. They then moved back into Iraq and named themselves ISIS in 2013. The reason why there is so much ciaos in this organization is because there was fallout of leadership from the commander that took over when Osama bin Laden’s was killed. The dispute between ISIS and AQSL (al Qaeda's senior leadership) is because when Baghdadi tried to take control over the Al Nusrah Front. “This is led by one of Baghdadi’s former lieutenants, Abu Muhammad al Julani. Baghdadi claimed that Al Nusrah would be folded into the......

...Paul Fisher Analysis 1.1 I will be conducting a rhetorical analysis for the article “'Iron' vs. 'Steel': Who'll be the 'Man' this summer? “. Who would you choose from the Genius, billionaire, playboy, and philanthropist or a newspaper editor from the Daily News? If you can’t choose from those then how about Iron Man vs Man of Steel? Marvel movies have and will be the biggest movies ever made and DC movies are following in the shadows of Marvels Success. I know that man of steel movie didn't do better than any Iron Man movies in the box office because Marvel has great Movies already in its pockets. My evaluation of the target audience for this article happens to be toward young adults and older that are interested in movie income. To be most specific it would also go to the people that have a big fan base towards Marvel or DC. This article hits many clues towards its audience. First of all the Marvel and DC fan base, by including the names of Tony Stark and Clark Kent. These two names are very well known in the comic and movies since late due to movies and comics. The article also includes the amount that both moves made when it hit box office. This leads me to believe that the target audience is towards DC and Marvel fans and also young adults and older adults in financing. For the articles purpose was to get your answer if the man of steel movie would be a bigger hit in the box office than iron man 3. This article is date to June 2013 the same month the man of......

...Chris Madrid Assessment Prep 12/11/15 Abel Gonzalez A Modern Venus. Andy Warhol’s piece titled Details of Renaissance Paintings (Sandro Botticelli, Birth of Venus, 1482) represents the face of the goddess Venus. This piece was made in 1984 as a depiction of the face of Venus from the earlier painting The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli which was completed in 1482. The piece’s present location is the Arkansas Arts Center, and its original location is the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The piece is acrylic and silkscreen ink on linen, and it can only be seen from one side because it is hanging on the wall. The work is just a recoloring of the face of Venus as depicted earlier in The Birth of Venus by Botticelli. However, while Warhol does use more colors in his work. For example, Venus’s face and neck are pink while her hair is black, red, orange, and yellow. The background is a solid light blue color. In Details of Renaissance Paintings, Venus’s face and hair are emphasized and the dominant elements are her hair because of the warm colors and her gaze. It honestly reminded me of the Sublime Sun. Warhol uses implied lines in the hair to direct viewers’ eyes. The lines direct viewers’ eyes to the right bottom, middle, and top because the strands are going in each of these directions. One bundle of hair goes down to the bottom of the piece on the left side close to her face. This bundle of hair brings some direction to the left side, but......

...Amanda Rowan EN1420 February 25, 2016 Project pt 2 Do you hate the smell of cigarette smoke and would like to see it banned? In my opinion, I believe that cigarette smoking should be banned. Many people will say that it should and shouldn’t for many different reasons. According to Debate.org, 80% said it should be banned and 20% says that it shouldn’t be banned. Also according to Robert N. Proctor, he wrote “Why ban the sale of cigarettes? The case of abolition.” He states that cigarettes are the deadliest artefact in human civilization. Do you think cigarette smoking should be banned? Each year 6 million people die alone from smoking cigarettes. Death and product defect are two reasons to abolish the sales of cigarettes. Each year, more and more wild fires are caused by cigarette butts from people. Smoking cigarettes is the number one cause of lung cancer therefore deaths, lung cancer is almost entirely due to the use of low pH flue-cured tobacco in cigarettes. I believe smoking cigarettes should be banned because everyone wants to live a long healthy life, and since lung cancer is the number one cause of death that means if you are an organ donner, then when you die, nobody will be able to use a lung if need be because it turned out to be a bad lung. The purpose of this article is about hoe cigarettes should be banned and why. Cigarette smoking has corrupted media that’s very popular, newspapers, and also magazines.
