I. INTRODUCTION – RISK MANAGEMENT

The technique of risk assessment is used in a wide range of professions and academic subjects. Engineers "risk assess" bridges to determine the likelihood and effect of failure of components, and social welfare workers "risk assess" their clients to determine the likelihood of the reoccurrence of anti-social behavior. Risk assessment has become a commonly used approach in examining environmental problems. It is used to examine risks of very different natures. Definitions in risk assessment are all-important because of the wide range of uses of the approach, and different meanings of terms used by different groups of experts and practitioners.
Hazard is commonly defined as "the potential to cause harm". A hazard can be defined as "a property or situation that in particular circumstances could lead to harm" Risk is a more difficult concept to define. The term risk is used in everyday language to mean "chance of disaster". When used in the process of risk assessment it has specific definitions, the most commonly accepted being "The combination of the probability, or frequency, of occurrence of a defined hazard and the magnitude of the consequences of the occurrence".
The distinction between hazard and risk can be made clearer by the use of a simple example. A large number of chemicals have hazardous properties. Acids may be corrosive or irritant to human beings for example. The same acid is only a risk to human health if humans are exposed to it. The degree of harm caused by the exposure will depend on the specific exposure scenario. If a human only comes into contact with the acid after it has been heavily diluted, the risk of harm will be minimal but the hazardous property of the chemical will remain unchanged.
There has been a gradual move in environmental policy and regulation from hazard-based to risk-based approaches. This…...

Anita knows that bran flakes are higher in fiber than corn flakes are, but she cannot think of any other changes. A few days after making the suggested changes, Anita complains that she is bloated and feels more constipated than she was before changing her diet.   One possible reason that Anita felt bloated and more constipated than she was before changing her diet, is that the bran flakes and the banana combination could have the effect of causing more constipation, due to the congested nature of the fiber that is located within the banana, which when mixed with the fiber of the bran flakes, causes bloating and congestion within her intestines as this food is being digested. In addition, it is also quite possible that the bran flake and orange juice combination can also be the cause of her bloated feeling, due to the fact that the combination of......

My "Eight Cow Bracelet"

...My "Eight Cow" Bracelet "Beauty is only skin deep" was a phrase I heard quite often during my awkward childhood. When I was a baby, I had two chins, Michelin Tire legs, and hair that stuck straight up even though it was easily over two inches long. My mom would often dress me in only a diaper on hot days inspiring my uncle to label me with the name of "Marshmallow Butt." It was a name he was quite fond of calling me, even years later. As I grew, the double chin turned into one and a half, the legs stretched into colonial columns, and the hair eventually lay flat. This all happened just in time for puberty-acne and my first training bra when I was only ten. It was during this transitional point in my life that my father began to teach me a valuable and significant lesson regarding beauty and the power of words. During my childhood, my family indulged in a weekly ritual we called family night. We used this time for various activities. We would hold family councils where we truly believed we had a say in important subjects. We would play games and have lessons such as "being kind to your family" or some other moral issue of the time. Sometimes we would sing songs, hear stories from Dad who could rival Mark Twain any day, or spend an hour to two eating ice cream and playing at the park. I am the second child and oldest daughter in a family of ten children, so these weekly "get-togethers" rarely went without some type of fiasco. These fiascoes varied from kicking......

...The latest technology is causing controversy all over the world, the newest being the Google Glasses. The purpose of this is to show what the glasses are. There are parts of the world that are against the glasses, either by Google itself or the glasses. Then how Google has been at at the front of new technology. Even though people are just seeing the problems with privacy, it was there way before the glasses were even made. First the reader should know what the Glass looks like. According to Google, they have “adjustable nose pads and a frame that allows a one-size-fits-all offering and two extra nose pads are included. Also integrated is 16GB of total flash memory, of which 12 GB is usable and synchronised with Google-supplied cloud storage.... Eight Ways to Go Green

...Eight Ways To Go Green Some people only get involved in the environment on Earth Day. You can make Earth Day every day by just making a few changes in your daily routine. Not only will you be helping the environment, but you will probably save money in the long run and live a much healthier life. Here are eight ways that you can go green. 1.) Re-Route Your Commute Walking or biking is ideal to get to your job or go to school. Not only is this healthy for the environment, but for you too. If you have to drive, then try to get a group of friends together to cut down on everyone driving separately. Even if you don't want to admit to trying to help the Earth, you have to agree that traveling in a group is WAY more fun than alone. Not only that, but you can cut down on the cost of gas if everyone chips in. 2.) Recycle Smart From electronics to clothing, one person's trash is another person's treasure. Everything can be recycled and should be. If your neighborhood does not do recycling, then petition your county and local governments to get it started. Your school should also recycle and if they don't, talk to the school board. Just one person can make a difference and the result is astounding. 3.) Save Energy Use as much natural light as possible. If you use indoor lights, than only use what is necessary. If you are stepping out of a room for more than 15 minutes, turn off the lights. Refrigerators eat up the most electricity in the household, so maximize......

Google Glasses

...Google Glasses Kaleb Ogden 3/23/15 I choice my research on Google Glasses. Google glass is a headset that you wear like a pair of glasses. Google has announced that it using prescription lenses into some models. The headset has a small prism screen tucked into the upper corner of the frame that keeps you constantly plugged in to your e-mail, calls and other notifications so you don't have to miss a beat. Similar to android’s smart watch have been in development for years. The design and hardware of Google glass is lightweight the titanium frame is bendable. Google glass is packed with Wi-Fi, GPS, speakers, a camera, microphone, touchpad and a gyroscope that detects head-tilts. Never get lost walking on a trail or missing a call or photo, due to its high cpu dual processor. I see that google glasses will impact the technology industry by allowing humans to use it as second nature. I believe Its to soon for public to use simply because it is in a early development state. Since smartphone watches are just becoming popular for portable accessories, google glasses will take flight some years down the line. Google has invested too much in Glass to entirely abandon the project. There’s no vision on why people would need the Glass, which is a major problem for the device. Without a vision, people will begin to make their own assumptions, and the current thought of people is that the device is used to step over privacy limits. Maybe 20 years from now Glass X will in...

Eight Men Out Paper

...Eight Men Out is a film that explores the alleged throwing off the 1919 World Series. The people involved included eight of the players from the Chicago White Sox organization, including the famous shoeless Joe Jackson. The movie covers this event in detail from the original idea being circulated all the way through the trail against the players. It illustrates the real events and discusses those that were really involved and those that were just dragged along. This film is very close to the truth of the actual events that took place in baseball during the 1919 season. Many baseball fans know that several players were involved in throwing the World Series early in the century, but what many people do not know is the details of this event. Only one player was approached by those who wanted the series thrown for betting purposes. His job was to get as many others on the team involved as was necessary. Each of these men who helped throw the series would receive ten thousand dollars, which at that time was a lot of money. During this time in baseball, players did not receive the enormous salaries they make today so they felt that this was a bonus the needed. The original player involved was the first baseman names Chic. The first person he got involved in the scheme was the shortstop named sweetie. From these two men the plan spread quickly. Soon much of the starting team was involved including the center fielder, right fielder and the third baseman named Bucky. However,......

Eight Threats

...concluded that after expenses, only 0.6% (1 in 160) of active mutual funds actually outperformed the market through the money manager’s skill. This low number “can’t eliminate the possibility that the few [funds] that did were merely false positives,” just lucky, in other words, according to Professor Wermers.4 Threat 3: Few Active Mutual Funds Have Outperformed in Bear Markets Some have claimed that active managers have a distinct advantage in bear markets. They can get out of troubled stocks and sectors early and avoid the worst of a downturn. Standard and Poor’s has been measuring the performance of active managers against their index counterparts for several years now. At the end of 2007, Newsday gathered market predictions from “eight major Wall Street Securities firms” and found an average price target for the S&P 500 by year-end 2008 of 1,653, rep- resenting a 12% increase over 2007. And at the beginning of 2008, USA Today similarly surveyed nine Wall Street investment strategists. They were a little less optimistic, expecting an average price target for the S&P 500 for the year of 1606, only an 8.6% increase. Of course, we now know that the S&P 500 Index declined by 37% in 2008. And many of those major Wall Street firms experienced their own unforeseen troubles, including being sold or merged. If Wall Street experts can’t even predict recessions or the direction of the market, it is questionable how active managers can success- fully pick individual stocks,......

...Day-To-Day Life Time Management Lucretia Chadwick GEN/200 Robyann Musil August 8, 2011 In my day-to-day life, I would like to address and solve the problem that I face with time management. I have found that in the past time management has been a major issue, not only in my personal life but also academically and professional. I am starting a new school, have a job and have a family to take care of. I want to make an effort to give all my endeavors my all, in order to do this I would like to refine my time management skills. To develop time management skills I plan on researching a plan of action from the textbook. The information that I have found was in Chapter one. The textbook gives various steps to better time management such as setting goals for you. Goals are an important part of life, but it is even more important for my time management plan. I will be seeking steps that the book suggests for time management and determine which steps will be beneficial for particular part of my life that I will be evaluating. Not all the steps will be beneficial for me, but most will. I will determine which steps will be necessary to use, for example, how my personal life will affect my professional life or how my academic life may affect my personal life. A History of the World in Six Glasses

...A HISTORY OF THE WORLD IN SIX GLASSES By Tom Standage (2005) PART ONE: Dialectical Journal Passage | Reaction(Reflection, Question, Connection, or Evaluation) | (Beer) “The most likely explanation for this preference is that, unlike food, beverages can genuinely be shared. When several people drink beer from the same vessel, they are all consuming the same liquid; when cutting up a piece of meat, in contrast, some parts are usually deemed to be more desirable than others. As a result, sharing a drink with someone is a universal symbol of hospitality and friendship. It signals that the person offering the drink can be trusted, by demonstrating that it is not poisoned or otherwise unsuitable for consumption.” (Page 21) | Each time I have company over, without thought to why, I have always offered my guest(s) a beverage. I’ve never even given consideration to as why drinks are often shared rather than food, much of the less never thought about what sharing a drink with someone can symbolize. I can connect this to the world by that many people authentically share drinks whether it is at a small gathering or a party for it does actually indicate hospitality, friendship, and even a sense of trustworthiness. | (Beer) “Liquids, being easily divisible, make ideal currencies.”- (Page33) | Like described in the above quote, liquid is easy to be shared equally. This allows beverages such as beer to be a system of money in general use. Once again, I’ve never given any thought to......

Around the World in Eight Days

...the market was Southwest Airlines (SWA) from Texas, USA. In 1971 it launched its first flights between Houston, Dallas and San Antonio at a price of $20, which was unheard at the time. It branded itself as the low fares airline and created a business model that would allow it to provide scheduled flights at a very low cost. It would specialise in short-haul flights of typically 600 km or an hour with high traffic frequency. Later as it grew from being a regional carrier operating in Texas to operating across the US they have altered this approach in order to offer services between different US states. They also have the unrivalled achievement in the US airline market to have been profitable from every year from 1973 until present day, although there have been some very chaotic years in the airline industry in general caused by events such as the two Gulf wars and the terrorist attack in New York on Sep 11, 2001. The model has also been implemented by other US carriers, such as JetBlue and America West and started off in Europe in the 1990´ies by Ryanair and easyJet. As mentioned in the delimitation this thesis will only analyse the role of this business model in Europe, so the airlines in other continents will not be included in this analysis – apart from SWA - but are only meant to give an overview of the geographical and historical development of this model. The reason SWA will still receive mention is that airlines such as Ryanair and easyJet have......

In Sable and Dark Glasses

...us to indulge our greatest desires and live in our perfect world. Writer Joan Didion shares with her us her rather peculiar at times fantasy of what she thought her life as an eight year twenty-four year old would be like in the piece “In Sable and Dark Glasses”. Didion’s use of imagery, details and diction effectively portrays her desire to become worldly, independent, and sophisticated adult. Didion’s desire to be older and sophisticated is addressed right off the bat which the author carries out through her use of imagery. Wishing to be “followed by paparazzi” or standing on the steps of an Argentinean Court house disguised in dark sunglasses paints the picture of life that is worldly and glamourous, something that’s extremely hard to do as an eight year old. She further adds to his by recounting the memory of her family traveling on a cross continental train to see her father perhaps where her desire to travel began. Added descriptions of her domineering ways show her desire to be independent and not be controlled but the other sex, hence why her fondest fantasy is on the steps of a court house after getting a divorce. The use of diction further adds to the point, with references to things such as “sable, moor, and schubert alley,” all of which are very sophisticated and not known to many eight year olds gives another indication of her desire to be an adult. These words also show her desire to live in luxury being that sable coat being made out of fur is extremely......
