As instructors, we’ve seen students doing things during class other than paying attention to class discussion or taking notes. These things range from reading a newspaper or magazine to text messaging, answering phone calls or just talking to a friend. This is distracting not just to instructors, but to others in the class.

Being able to take good notes, and to be a good student overall as well as being successful in your career, primarily involves good listening skills. We want to teach you things that will contribute to you being a person and a professional of good quality. We want you to be respected by other people. If you show people that you are a quality person, they will respect you more and you will achieve more in your career. Being a good listener is a mark of a person of high quality because:

1. You show respect for everyone involved and they will respect you for that. When you are engaged in something else during class, during a meeting, in court, etc., it sends the message that you are not fully listening. As an instructor, boss, coworker OR a classmate, that tells me that you are discourteous and unprofessional!

2. When you pay full attention, you show people that they are worth your full attention. They then tend to respect you more!

3. The more you pay attention, the more you can take in and use information, which shows that you are a capable person, which will earn respect. On the other hand, if information seems to “go in one ear and out the other,” people will tend to think of you as unreliable or flaky and will not respect you or value you as a professional.

4. The more you listen, the more likely you will be able to follow through on instructions or requests and people will learn that you can be trusted with tasks. This is important while in school because first, it will help you take the best notes possible, which will help you perform the best on exams and on projects and second, the instructors you have here will be the people you ask to vouch for you when you go out in the workforce. The more reliable you are in listening, the better you will perform in school and the better the job recommendation your instructors can provide. In a job this is important because the more your bosses or coworkers know that they can depend on you, the more responsibility you will be entrusted with and the further you will go in your career.

As instructors, we have all been told by students that, “I can do this and listen at the same time!” or “I already know this, so I’m bored,” or “I don’t need to know this for my future career, so I don’t need to pay attention.” The bottom line is not listening is not fair to everyone, including yourself, and here’s why:

1. As teachers, we need to know if you’re really listening. The only way we can do that is if we can see your face and your reaction to what we’re saying.

2. While you may believe you can “multi task” and do something else during a lecture, the truth is many students do not do it well and they miss hearing something important. Also, they often wind up being a distraction to those around them.

3. You show a lack of respect for your instructor and your classmates. The time an instructor must spend getting your attention back, as well as refocusing everyone’s attention on the class is time wasted by the instructor as it means less teaching and learning for everyone. It is stealing time and education, which you are all paying for!

4. If people are not fully listening, more repetition is necessary. This not only causes the instructor to work harder and take longer to finish what s/he has to say, but it is rude to those who are listening and have already heard what was said. The more an instructor has to spend time repeating things for those who didn’t hear the first time, the less time there is to spend on covering concepts the entire class could benefit from.

5. If someone isn’t listening, they often need help later on because they missed information that they need to succeed in the class. These students often become frustrated and may waste their own time trying to figure something out simply because they were otherwise engaged when the original lecture was going on. They also may fall behind in their work because they do not understand concepts that were presented. Instructors then have to “re-teach” these students information the rest of the group learned just a few minutes earlier which is discourteous and unprofessional.

The more you pay full attention, the better your notes will be, the better your overall study skills and class performance will be and the better professional you will become!

Taking notes during lectures actually helps you become a better listener!…...

The Return to Your Own Life

...The return to your own lives In modern society, there are still many people don’t know how we best should live our lives. I think The Epic of Gilgamesh and The Matrix both have the similarity of people get learned from mistakes in their lives. At also, the difference of their life is Gilgamesh was afraid of death but in The Matrix, the main character was not afraid of death in his life. First of all, Gilgamesh was afraid of death and he was trying to find immortality. After his friend Enkidu was dead, he could not imagine what death is. In The Epic of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh said, “Despair is in my heart. What my brother is now, that shall I be when I am dead. Because I am afraid of death I will go as best I can to find Utnapishitim whom they call the Faraway, for he as entered the assembly of the gods.”(The Epic of Gilgamesh P97) So he started his journey and tried to find immortality. Unfortunately, Gilgamesh could not find the immortality in the end of his life. In contrast, the main character was not afraid of death in his life. There are two worlds in the main character’s life, one is The Matrix which is a computer program and another world is the real one which is controlled by artificial intelligence. When his friend Mopheus was captured by agents, he decided to come back to The Matrix to save his friend. When Trinity which is his comrade said to him if he is going back to that dangerous area, he probably is not going to come back to the real world again because those...

Assessing Your Own Leadership

...Assessing your own leadership, capability and performance Level 5. By Sue Rogers 15/05/12 Understand Leadership styles Contemporary leadership as defined by Gareth Jones and Jennifer George is “the process by which an individual exerts influence over other people and inspires, motivates, and directs their activities to help achieve group or organisational goals.” As I consider myself to be a contemporary leader, who has recently been allocated the task of being part of a leadership team which will lead a new and hopefully innovative health and social care service forward in Cornwall; I believe it is an essential part of this role to ensure I understand exactly what effective leadership is and how I will need to use the right skills at the right time. In addition the new service implementation is taking place within a background of a much wider cultural change from the relative safety of the NHS into what is essentially the private sector. Working within a community health service which has recently become a community interest company staff were naturally concerned about what this might mean for both themselves and for the patients we all provide care for. In order to achieve this major change senior management endeavoured to engage staff in the decision making process by holding interactive information sessions, using computerised updates asking for feedback and questionnaires. The leadership styles employed to achieve this attempted to be transformational (Burn,......

Write Your Own Story

...Have you ever had someone tell you what or what not to do in your life, even though you felt that you should take a completely different path? Well my name is Lindsee and I am going to tell you about how I’ve dealt with this for the past year and a half. Just to give you my relationship timeline in a nutshell: I met Brett in August of 2012. Two weeks after we met he went to boot camp and training for the Marine Corps. That was six long months of barely seeing each other or talking. We wrote many letters and talked as much as we could, which was not a lot at all. He came home in March, in June he found out he was deploying to Afghanistan some time soon, and proposed to me in July. After debating possibilities for a few days, we decided to get married before he left. We planned an entire wedding and were married two weeks after the engagement. We got to have a week and a half of married life before he had to leave. So for the next few minutes I would like to tell you how we overcame the criticism, what life is like being married to a Marine at such a young age, and what I would do differently if I could rewind time. Brett was in boot camp for 3 months, with no communication except for snail mail. After that he went to more training, and then to schooling. Six months of almost no communication outside of letters. You can believe that people were calling me insane for being so devoted to a guy I knew for two weeks before he left. I was told it wouldn’t last, he would be......

How to Do Own Homework

...important tasks. Doing your homework is a must because it takes what you learn in class and gives you a platform to build on the following day. If you do not complete your homework, you will not have the same platform to build on and, over time, your metaphorical bridge will collapse because you do not have the needed building blocks in which to reference from. Homework isn't just given to students by teachers because they feel like it (well in some cases it is :) ) but rather to help you later on in your learning. If you have a problem with a specific task, try asking for help in the end of class or in an email. Many times your teacher can help you a lot more than a parent could because the teacher knows exactly where the class is and what some common problems are. A parent, although trying to be helpful, may not be very good at helping because they are at a much different education level and therefore know things that will really mess you up. One of the tricks to completing homework is dynamic time management. This means that instead of doing exactly what the teacher tells you to do, only do the stuff you have a problem with. An great example of this is math homework because quite often you will receive a large number of questions that may be deterring. What helps is to only do the things that you have a problem actually doing rather then every single question. This is a much more effective homework strategy because it gives you the time needed to work on everything......

Create Your Own Chapter

...The lights were violently bright. Too bright for eyes that, for the past 12 hours, had been subjected to the smokey, dim-lighting of a scuzzy bar or drunk sleep. Waking up at 4:30AM isnt Taylor's idea of a good time, especially when she had just crawled into bed at 4:03AM, but the job helps maintain the wild-child lifestyle that she had grown accustomed to. "Fucking kill me", she huffed, pissed that her co-worker had turned on the lights. She thought to herself, "Just make it through the day Taylor. You only have to be here until 12:30. Once the interns get here, freedom will be yours...You can do it." Work for Taylor, isnt what most people would call work. She works for EVP, Elite Vision Productions, a social events company that was created by a sorority sister-turned-stripper who got tired of the stage rotation and meth-addicted coworkers. As an Executive Event Coordinator (an inflated title, with inflated pay), Taylor was considered to be pretty high up on the chain of command. She managed 10 people, 3 interns and had keys to the building. Yet there were still quite a few people above her, which, at this point in time, she was ok with. There are two offices for Elite Vision Productions in sunny California. Standing at 4 stories tall on X Ave in Beverly Hills, CA, the headquarters of EVP is a reconstructed warehouse, looking like it would fit better in some hipster infested district in New York City, than in the glossy glamour of LA. Building Your Own Computer

...Building your Own Computer It is increasingly popular to build your own computer. In most cases, it saves money, and it guarantees you get what you want. It also assures you avoid proprietary designs many companies use to keep you coming to them for new parts. Best of all, having built the system yourself, you become very familiar with that system and with computers in general. People from all walks of life today build their own PCs. Executives, engineers, students, housewives, they all do it today. But, at the same time, pre-built PCs have come down in price quite a bit. Today, one is left to wonder whether it is best to build a PC yourself or to simply buy one off the shelf. I’ll address that here. If you are a real PC enthusiast, this question may be a non-issue. The answer may be as obvious as the color of the sky. This is predictable, of course. When one builds their own PC, they are able to not only understand their PC better because they built it, but they are able to choose each component that goes into their PC. There is really something to be said for choosing your own components, and I’ll go into that further below. There is also a certain sense of satisfaction with having built a PC. One spends a few hours (or less for those more familiar with the process) to put the thing together. Then comes the moment of truth when one hits the power switch for the first time. If it works on the first try, its beer time! But, besides the joy of it, is it worth it? Is......
