INTRODUCTION

In June 2007, consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies around the world were optimistically betting on growth in India. Dabur India Ltd. (Dabur) was among the top 10 CPG1 companies in India by revenue (see
Exhibit 1). Dabur’s chief executive officer (CEO), Sunil Duggal, was bullish on the Indian market, yet he was also convinced of the imperative to internationalize. Scheduled to meet soon with a group of institutional investors to brief them on the company’s growth strategy, Duggal had to factor in concerns about the priorities of the company’s international business division, and, in particular, he needed to address the concerns expressed among foreign institutional investors. Duggal anticipated their questions:
Shouldn’t Dabur first build scale in the fast growing domestic market before attempting to go global?
Wouldn’t a strategy of pursuing new global markets detract…...

In Dabur, the sales and marketing department forecasts the demand for fruit juices for coming 6 months. They use the system developed by SAP inorder to forecast demand and manage their inventory. RPP (Revolving Product Planning) is used to determine the market requirement once a month. Through this system they are able to determine what and when the raw materials are required. The SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) has the FG code for every item. Then the system determines the purchase requirement. After that the purchase order is placed by the company to their suppliers. Ahuja, Institute for Integrated Learning in Management, New Delhi, India Ms. Sweta Agarwal, Institute for Integrated Learning in Management, New Delhi, India ABSTRACT After running as a family business for over 100 years, when in late 1990s the management of the Dabur was handed over to a team of professional managers, the new management faced a gigantic task of improving performance in several critical areas. In particular, working capital and cost management required urgent attention as the company’s performance in these areas had been far from satisfactory. The then prevailing current ratio of 3.2 and quick ratio of 2.4 were considered too high and indicative of heavy unnecessary investments in working capital that would have a negative effect on company’s profitability. Efforts to improve the working capital efficiency were met with stiff resistance from various quarters, but finally yielded results. The case study discusses the measures taken to improve the working capital and cost management performance, and how with concerted efforts the management turned around a highly inefficient working capital management into one of the most efficient in the FMCG sector of Indian Industry. In fact, the company seemed to have taken the matter to the other extreme of negative working capital, with the current ratio declining to 0.8 and the quick ratio to just 0.4 in 2004-05. Answer: The Partition of India was the process of dividing the subcontinent along sectarian lines, which took place in 1947 as India gained its independence from the British Raj. The northern, predominantly Muslim sections of India became the nation of Pakistan, while the southern and majority Hindu section became the Republic of India. Background to Partition In 1885, the Hindu-dominated Indian National Congress (INC) met for the first time. When the British made an attempt to divide the state of Bengal along religious lines in 1905, the INC lead huge protests against the plan. This sparked the formation of the Muslim League, which sought to guarantee the rights of Muslims in any future independence negotiations. Although the Muslim League formed in opposition to the INC, and the British colonial government attempted to play the INC and Muslim League off one another, the two political parties generally cooperated in their mutual goal of getting Britain to "Quit India."
