Breezy Air Filters - Redefining the Business

Coming up for air

Breezy Auto Parts has been supplying the North American automobile industry with carburetors and air filters for more than half a century. With revenues of about $100 million a year, it is a significant player in the parts industry. Initially, it supplied carburetors and filters to each of the Big Three domestic manufacturers. When foreign car manufacturers entered North America to set up manufacturing operations, Breezy also developed relationships with the newcomers. It redesigned some of its products to fit the foreign models. It also introduced electronic data interchange (EDI) to support just-in-time deliveries to all of its customers. As a result, it successfully realized its original corporate vision of becoming North America’s leading supplier of carburetors and air filters, a position it has occupied ever since.

The price of crude oil has been soaring as have gas prices at the pump. There have been temporary dips in price, but the overall trend is unmistakable: it will be far more expensive to drive in the future. As a result, car sales have flattened and in some cases declined. This is especially true of the big gas guzzling SUVs upon which the North American industry had staked its future. But the slump is affecting pretty much all makes and models except for hybrids and the newly introduced Brainy Car. The contraction is even affecting the Asian and European car manufacturers that have located in North America.

In the past, Breezy could always count on respectable profit margins, but this is no longer the case. Sales are…...

Barbie Isn't Real

...pounds, in comparison to the average runway model weighing at 110 pounds (Sexton, Timothy). This is a dramatic difference and young girls will believe that a model is their standard. All these unrealistic images are not only making women feel inferior but also not proud of their bodies. (Sands, Breezy). It is unclear to look at a high end fashion magazine and feel that you are not the best just because of the woman in a smaller dress size. From make up products to the latest trendy diets everyone is trying, yet no one is gaining anything from it, but temporary results. Being forced to look at these images at a young age creates society into thinking it is right. With all these influential images in the media, they are causing more damage to society by forcing us to become unhealthy and harm our bodies, in order to meet their standards. With more and more young girls and boys turning to anorexia and bulimia in order for them to look like these advertisements (Sands, Breezy). Eating disorders are no joke and not only harmful, but dangerous for these girls and boys. These harmful images are creating young adolescents to damage their mentality and destroy their self-esteem (Sands. Breezy). It is depressing to know that society feels inferior based on what the media creates. “A simple photograph can tap into our emotions”(Siddiqi, H) It is interesting that our minds can be controlled by a single image we see on magazines, television screens, and even billboards. Both physically......

Trying to keep sales level up, Chuck established a reward incentive based on net sales. Bob Sellmore as the new sales manager was eager to set his career in motion and decided he would attempt to increase the sales levels. He recruited new customers while keeping the old clientele. For one year, Bob had proved himself to Chuck, who decided to introduce an advertising program to further increase sales which brought in orders from a number of new customers, many of whom Breezy had never done business with before. With the influx of orders from new customers, Chuck became excited that he instructed Jane Breezy, the finance manager to raise the initial credit limit for new customers that induce them to purchase more. As the finance manager, Jane performs credit checks. At first, Jane really sees to it that credits are approved on the basis of past behavior to those customers who she had been familiar. When there are new customers, she usually approved low credit at first but increases it after the customer exhibited reliability. But Chuck felt that this policy is restricting a further increase on sales that he decided to increase credit limits even to new......

...Assignment 4. Required: 1. Evaluate Breezy’s Working Capital Management in 2002 and 2003. Do you consider there to be a deficiency or excess in Breezy’s working capital levels relative to the industry? 2. Calculate Days Inventory, Days Receivable and Days Payable for 2002 and 2003 (using average balance sheet amounts where relevant). What is the funding gap for Breezy in each of these periods? What does this mean in terms of Breezy’s growth strategy? 3. How can Breezy improve its working capital management? Make recommendations in relation to specific short-term assets and liabilities. Are there any risks/downsides to your recommendations? 4. To convince Brian about flaws (if any) in Breezy’s working capital management, a bottom-line impact needs to be demonstrated. Is it possible to attribute an approximate cost to the deficiency or excess as calculated in (1)? What is this approximate cost? 1. According to the formula of NWC we have it: | 2002 | 2003 | NWC | 390.000,00 | 755.000,00 | Current ratio | 3,79 | 4,28 | As according to the balance sheet definition of working capital (current assets minus current liabilities), NWC is an indication of the firm’s current solvency in repaying its creditors. So in 2002 and 2003 the company had NWC of 390.000,00 and 755.000,000 respectively. If we compare current ratios of the company with industry average numbers, we have quite good situation here. The industry...
