Baseball has and always will be a part of my life. I have grown up playing the sport since I was a small child. As of late i have had the opportunity to discuss physics and get a better understanding of the forces involved in everyday life. Each and every day physics of all types are continuously happening around us all. We may not notice it, but that's because its all just normal for us now. From driving a car down Pacific Coastal Highway to looking West as we watch giant waves crash in to the coast. I'm taking this opportunity to show my understanding of physical science by explaining how and which forces are present in the sport of baseball. From throwing a ball, the build up of a swing all the way through the contact of the ball and the path of which the ball takes will be examined and explained throughout the course of this paper.
One of the first quotes I came across after I decided to choose this topic was “ The physics of baseball is not rocket science. Its much harder” (Adair, R. (n.d.). Physics of baseball) One thing people want to know is how does a ball react to the impact of a baseball bat. To touch base on this subject I want to go through what type of energy is used. A ball is thrown and takes on a role of kinetic energy. Kinetic energy is anything with matter moving or in motion. As the ball speeds through the air and the bat and ball make contact there is a split second where that kinetic energy turns into potential energy. Potential energy is the stored energy in an object due to its position. In this case, its the baseball as it hits the bat. Imagine a trampoline. Your jumping on the trampoline and you bounce up and come back down. At some point of up and down there is a split second where you are in a set position. ...Perception: Baseball Ever since I was a child, baseball has been a passion and love of mine. I would watch the Mets play every night on TV. with my family ever since I could remember. On the hot summer days, we would bring the TV. outside and watch the games until the stars were shinning over us. January 2013 Participation Assignment 1 The group I chose to reflect on for this assignment is the baseball team here at Western New England University, my freshman year in particular. When reminiscing back on the 2011 season, I can recall many specific qualities of Keyton’s criteria that this group displayed. As a freshman, I paid close attention to our group who exhibited many qualities of leadership and aspiration, goals that I hope to impose upon my under classmen. With respect to size, the team barley fit Keyton’s threshold, usually carrying no more than 19 players on average throughout the season. The group was interdependent, and heavily relied on the next man to “step up” and make a play. In order for a successful baseball team, interdependence is required, and our actions and energy often influenced each other to succeed. The team shared one particular but strenuous goal: winning a national championship. This goal is impossible to be achieved with one person, but large enough to require everyone’s participation. With regards to group identity, our team was a tight knit unit. Respect was earned and given where needed and the team acted as a large family, eating meals together and hanging out off the field as well. ...Baseball is America’s pastime for the last one hundred years. Baseball has brought joy and happiness to many people’s lives throughout the years. Baseball is theater to many people. It shows the struggle between two different teams playing their hearts out to win a championship; just like two countries going to war. Do you think the team with only $30 million would ever stand a chance of competing against them in a playoff race? With no spending rules in place this is becoming the new reality in Major League Baseball. The lack of a salary cap in baseball is allowing teams that have money to spend extravagantly, giving those teams an unfair advantage over those that cannot afford heavy spending. While spending big does not always guarantee a championship, it has been shown to increase the chances of a playoff appearance. Excessive spending on players is one of the major issues. Compare this to a sport like the NFL where a salary cap has been in place for over two decades, and it is clear how spending limits can create a more even playing field. Spending has been shown to increase the chances of having a playoff caliber team. Two separate studies of baseball payrolls conducted from 2000-2010 confirm this. ...Although many argue that the answer to the question “how could the world be a better place?” should be left to intellectuals, politicians or scholars, I believe that the best answer to this questions is demonstrated by 60,000 baseball fans. Fans at a baseball game do not merely provide support for the home team, but also a metaphor for life. Specifically, the actions of the spectators at a game illustrate the selfish desires of human nature as well as a possible answer to improve life for all. For example, when I attend a baseball game, I notice that many fans have individual aspirations for success beyond which team wins the game. It appears that ultimate desire of a baseball fan is to be featured on the Jumbo-tron, the oversized television screen located within the stadium. Many fans believe that the Jumbo-tron brings everlasting happiness and glory to any featured on its oversized screen. However, while the Jumbo-tron allows some to rejoice in their fifteen seconds of fame, I have noticed that it also has a dark side. ...thing that stands out about our similarities is that we both played baseball in college. My grandpa grew up on the west side of Chicago in a neighborhood called Garfield Park. He grew up in a lower class family that often couldn’t afford nice things. Since he loved the game of baseball, situations would sometimes come down to if he wanted a new baseball glove or new cloths. My grandpa no brainer would pick the baseball glove.
