Purdue Owl: the Rhetorical Situation

...an oral speech that was broadcast by both loudspeakers at the event and over radio and television. Dr. King drew on years of training as a minister and public speaker to deliver the speech. He also drew on his extensive education and the tumultuous history of racial prejudices and civil rights in the US. Audiences at the time either heard his speech in person or over radio or television broadcasts. Part of the speech near the end was improvised around the repeated phrase “I have a dream.” Author http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/625/08/ Page 1 of 9 Purdue OWL: The Rhetorical Situation 9/11/13 7:53 PM Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was the most iconic leader of the American Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s. He was an African-American Baptist minister and prominent civil rights activist who campaigned to end segregation and racial discrimi- nation. He gained inspiration from Howard Thurman and Mahatma Gandhi, and he drew extensively from a deep, rich cultural tradition of African-American Christian spiritualism. Audience The audiences for “I Have a Dream” are extraordinarily varied. In one sense, the audi- ence consisted of the 200,000 or so people who listened to Dr. King in person. But Dr. King also overtly appealed to lawmakers and citizens everywhere in America at the time of his speech. There were also millions of people who heard his speech over radio and television at the time. And many more millions people since 1963 have heard recordings of the......

Apes and Language: A Review of the Literature Over the past thirty years, researchers have demonstrated that the great apes (chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans) resemble humans in language abilities more than had been thought possible. Just how far that resemblance extends, however, has been a matter of some controversy. Researchers agree that the apes have acquired fairly large vocabularies in American Sign Language and in artificial languages, but they have drawn quite different conclusions in addressing the following questions: The writer sets up her organization in the introduction. 1. How spontaneously have apes used language? 2. How creatively have apes used language? 3. Can apes create sentences? 4. What are the implications of the ape language studies? This review of the literature on apes and language focuses on these four questions. Headings, centered, help readers follow the organization. ...indentation), and the appropriate length can vary, but they are typically between 150 and 200 words. Section 2.04 of the APA manual (American Psychological Association [APA], 2010) has additional information about the Abstract. The use of an Abstract is important because many journal readers first read it to determine if the entire article is worth reading. Safety: An Aviation Manager’s Perspective Before getting started, you will notice some things about this paper. First, everything is double-spaced. Second, margins are 1-inch wide on all sides. Third, paragraphs are indented ½ inch. Fourth, the upper left of each page has a running head in all capital letters, and the upper right has the page number. Try to pay attention to all of these details as you look through this paper. Now that those details are out of the way, you should know that this first part of the paper is called the “Introduction” section, yet it does not have a heading that actually says “Introduction”. Instead, the title of the paper is typed at the top of the first page (be sure to center the title, but do not put it in bold). In this section, you would often start with a topic paragraph that introduces the problem under study. The importance of the topic should be pretty clear from the first paragraph of the Introduction. Section 2.05 of the APA manual (APA, 2010) will help give you some ideas about how to write this. Remember to cite your sources......

Four Main Components for Effective Outlines Ideally, you should follow the four suggestions presented here to create an effective outline. When creating a topic outline, follow these two rules for capitalization: For firstlevel heads, present the information using all uppercase letters; and for secondary and tertiary items, use upper and lowercase letters. The examples are taken from the Sample Outline handout. Parallelism—How do I accomplish this? Each heading and subheading should preserve parallel structure. If the first heading is a verb, the second heading should be a verb. Example: I. CHOOSE DESIRED COLLEGES II. PREPARE APPLICATION ("Choose" and "Prepare" are both verbs. The present tense of the verb is usually the preferred form for an outline.) Lewis (1984) is from his book Till We Have Faces. It goes, “Why should your heart not dance?” (p. 96). After quoting something, you need to use a citation. If you have already mentioned the author in your text, then you only need to use the year of publication (and the page number when quoting something directly). If you haven’t mentioned the author in text, or have talked about other things more recently so that it could be confusing, then include the author’s last name in the citation.
