Abstract
For my extended essay, I decided to conduct an experiment; to find the answer to the following question, what was the optimum amount of water required to make a water rocket travel the furthest? What I did in the experiment was adding an initial amount of water (100 ml) to the rocket and measuring the distance the rocket travelled. After taking down the results I repeated the experiment in an effort to find out which value of water was the optimum amount, required to make it fly the furthest, I came to the conclusion that it was 120 millilitres, which made the rocket fly 25.97 meters. My initial hypothesis of the experiment was that the more water that I added to the rocket, the further the rocket would fly. I had set controlled variables as well as differentiated between my independent and dependent variables. Tony Kushner, who is the playwright, did a fantastic job on piecing it all together and making it such a well-known play in the theater sprectrum. The main idea of Kushner’s play was to show the struggles of being gay in America. People were learning more and more of AIDS and HIV and just how severe it is. The year is 1986 and it is cold October weather in New York. Louis Ironson and Prior Walter are lovers and Joe Pitt, a clerk in the U.S. Court of Appeals, and Harper Pitt are married. Roy Cohn is a well-connected lawyer that is good friends with Joe and his family. Prior finds out that he has AIDS and Louis cannot fathom the idea of losing his lover so when Prior has a traumatic fall and is rushed to the ER, Louis cannot stand it and ends up leaving him. Roy offers a Joe a job in D.C. with the Justice Department, however Harper does not want to leave her home in New York. ...How Rockets use Energy Rockets use and convert energy many times while operating. First of all, energy is the ability to do work or to organize or change matter. That energy is what moves the rocket. But first the energy starts out in the rocket fuel, as chemical potential energy. Potential energy is stored energy that is in an object due to the positioning of its parts. In model rocket engines, the fuel is made out of pressed black powder. The fuel is stored in a cartridge, which gets placed in the bottom of the rocket. Chemical potential energy changes into heat when the engine is ignited, turning the potential energy into kinetic energy which is energy in the form of motion. Heat is kinetic energy because heat is how fast atoms in an object vibrate, which is motion. When the rocket fuel ignites, it expands. When the heat is created, the fuel becomes a gas and expands out the bottom of the rocket. The force pushing down pushes the rocket in the opposite direction, up. Isaac Newton’s 3rd law of motion explains this reaction: “Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.” That means that when you push down, you will go up. When the expanding gas pushes the rocket up, the gas loses energy, and the rocket gains kinetic energy. This is because a force that changes an object's motion gives that object energy. ...NPL Water Rocket Challenge 2015 Date: Wednesday 17th June 2015 Venue: National Physical Laboratory sports ground, TW11 0EB The Challenge The aim is to launch a rocket powered by water/air pressure and land it in designated target zones, whilst trying to earn additional bonus points by time of flight. Your score will be your time in the air plus bonus seconds gained from landing in target zones. People have tried using parachutes to achieve long flight times and whilst there will be a prize for the longest time in the air; these rockets tend to get caught by the wind and land outside the scoring zone resulting in a null score. You can find more details in the rules. (No changes from 2014 rules.) There will be two separate competitions; one for schools only (event venue open for equipment checking from 12.30pm, event starts 13:30 and ends 16:30) and an open competition (from 6pm until 9pm), for colleges, universities, businesses, youth clubs, NPL staff or anyone wishing to enter! ...Bottled Water There are many different kinds of bottled waters for sale in this modern day. Some bottled waters are carbonated, flavored, or have added chemicals for cleaning purposes. A twenty ounce bottle of water cost’s around one or two dollars. In reference to the water bill from my parent’s house in the town of Chesaning which is in Saginaw County the cost of water is three dollars and thirty cents for one thousand gallons of municipal water (Ebenhoeh D). Not only do bottled water companies use up the earth’s water supply, they use massive amounts of plastic, and the water they sell that is supposedly cleaner and more healthy than tap water, is less healthy and has more contaminants than tap water. Bottled water is no cleaner than municipal water. In the United States bottled standards are set and regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standards for cleanliness are not as high as the regulations set for city or municipal water set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). According to Lauren Posnick of the FDA, bottled water can have up to two hundred and fifty parts per million of dissolved solids and still be clean enough to sell (Posnick). Drinking water that comes through the tap is monitored through the Environmental Protection Agency, also known as the EPA.
