All Eyez on you' by Nikki Giovanni depicts the way that racism affected the lives of those who attempted to make a difference in a society that lacked the belief of equality. Tupac Shakur - Dear Mama

...Tupac Amaru Shakur (June 16, 1971 – September 13, 1996), also known by his stage names 2Pac and briefly as Makaveli, was an American rapper and actor.[1] Shakur has sold over 75 million albums worldwide as of 2010,[2] making him one of the best-selling music artists in the world. MTV ranked him at number two on their list of The Greatest MCs of All Time and Rolling Stone named him the 86th Greatest Artist of All Time.[3] His double disc album All Eyez on Me is one of the best selling hip hop albums of all time. Shakur began his career as a roadie, backup dancer, and MC for the alternative hip hop group Digital Underground, eventually branching off as a solo artist.[4][5][6] The themes of most of Shakur's songs revolved around the violence and hardship in inner cities, racism and other social problems. Both of his parents and several other of his family were members of the Black Panther Party, whose ideals were reflected in his songs. During the latter part of his career, Shakur was a vocal participant in the so-called East Coast–West Coast hip hop rivalry, becoming involved in conflicts with other rappers, producers and record-label staff members, most notably The Notorious B.I.G. and his label Bad Boy Records.[7] On September 7, 1996, Shakur was shot multiple times in a drive-by shooting at the intersection of Flamingo Road and Koval Lane in Las Vegas, Nevada.[8] He was taken to the Southern Nevada University Medical Center, where he died six days later.[...

...Rap COINTELPRO: Subverting the power of Hip-Hop By FinalCall.com News Updated Jul 24, 2005, 10:53 pm One-on-One with BlackElectorate.com's Cedric Muhammad |[pic] | Political commentator Cedric Muhammad published a series of Rap COINTELPRO articles on his website (BlackElectorate.com) beginning in 2000 initially dealing with the suspicious circumstances surrounding the deaths of Tupac Shakur (2Pac) and Christopher Wallace (Notorious B.I.G.) With great insight, in later parts of the series, Brother Cedric broadened the topical range identifying and investigating the stratagem implemented by a growing number of police departments across the United States dealing specifically with increased surveillance – some would even say harassment – of Hip Hop artists and the peculiar treatment of crimes occurring within the Hip Hop community. Brother Cedric spoke with Final Call Online Correspondent Ashahed Muhammad about the relationship of those subjects to the global strategy of the infamous J. Edgar Hoover – whose plan was to stifle progressive activism within the Black community and to prevent the rise of a "Black Messiah." Ashahed Muhammad (AM): Thank you for taking time out of your schedule. I know you are busy writing, publishing, being a consultant and political advisor, etc. I appreciate you taking the time to speak with me today. Cedric Muhammad (CM): Thank you. And it’s of course the greatest honor to be......

Struugles of a Single Mother

...fails to mention what caused his mothers hard live. Whereas in Tupacs video he repeatedley emphasis that he was the source of his mothers problems. “ I reminisce on the stress that I caused it was hell” These two contracting ides presented a different argument on what being a single mother is. After reviewing each text, I feel as if the text that truly presents an accurate deception of family relationships in single parent household is that of Tupac. “Dear Mama” shows how no matter what happens life that Tupacs mother still loved him. This video best represents the value of single motherhood better than that of Hughes because it shows a more detailed description of how stressful it can be raising young men as single mother. Colorism

...Originating in the Bronx in the 1970s, the genre that would later become a global phenomenon grew substantially in the ’80s and, by the time the ’90s rolled around, had fully matured both artistically and commercially. When you think about hip hop in that decade, two names hover above the rest: 2Pac (“California Love”) and The Notorious B.I.G. (“Hypnotize”). If you’ll recall, though, the ’90s was also a period in which hip hop expanded from being purely a coastal phenomenon. Southern anthems like “Back That Thang Up” by Juvenile and Fiend, Silkk, Mia-X and Mystikal-featured Master P song, “Make Em Say Uhh!,” dominated the charts. Meanwhile, the East and West Coasts held it down with their own distinctive hits, respectively, including Jay-Z’s “Can I Get A…” and Warren G ft. Nate Dogg’s “Regulate.” If any of the aforementioned songs come on right now, in any region, hip hop fans will react. And that acknowledgment likely manifests with head bobbing, rapping along, or dancing. 38. “Summertime” – DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince Album: Homebase Year: 1991 Before Will hit it big with The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, this friends-since-childhood duo recorded a summer anthem that eventually won a Grammy for Best Rap Single in 1991 “I Wish” – Skee-lo Album: I Wish Year: 1991 . “Still Not A Player” – Big Punisher ft. Tupac sold more than 75 million albums worldwide, making him one of the best-selling artists in the world. Classical and Rap Music

...according to 8rapworld.com. In the 90’s also came the development of East Coast and West Coast rap, which brought artists such as Wu Tang Clan, 2Pac, and Notorious BIG. In the year 2000 came the artist Eminem and his album The Marshall Mathers LP, which sold over ten million copies and became the fastest-selling album of all time. In the 2000’s came Alternative Rap, a different style, which brought artists like The Roots and Gnarls Barkley, which introduced us to performer Cee Lo Green. Classical music has been around for centuries. From the beginning of classical music, starting with Medieval continuing to the post Great War years, classical music has inspired young children to become pianists, violinists, among others. Musical composers such as Ludwig van Beethoven, Frank Schubert, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, for example, continue to have their music performed either by an orchestra, or a single artist. For rap music, it the influence can depend on the type of artist, it could be a positive or negative influence. Rap music, around since the late 1970’s, has not only influenced young children who want to become a rapper but it also has influenced future DJ’s to “sample” their songs. Early rap artists like The Sugar Hill Gang (they recorded the very first rap song, “Rapper’s Delight in 1979), Run-DMC, in the beginning of rap, to 2Pac and The Notorious BIG in the later years. Rap music also has gotten some bad publicity in the past decade, due to the language......

2pac Changes Record Review

...Record Review 2Pac – Changes Due to his ‘street cred’, Tupac had the ability to reach out to a large audience; dominantly black people, creating a positive impact on their lives and their communities. His track ‘Changes’ is a prime example of how he strived to send a positive message to his listeners, despite his ‘thug life’ image. Within his lyrics he comments on the main issues in the black community, expressing his opinion on police, drugs and gangs. During this 4minutes and 30 seconds he attempts to grasp his audience by using his poetic ability to portray his life in such a way that his listeners are able to relate to his story and almost feel his emotions. The main issue which he speaks about is racism. "Cops give a damn about a negro? Pull the trigger, kill a n****, he's a hero", these 2 bars alone show how he believes the world is against him, that even the police are racist and care little for the life of an African-American. “It ain't a secret don't conceal the fact...the penitentiary's packed, and it’s filled with blacks", this particular part of the song conveys several messages. For example, he could be saying that due to the racial situation of the time, black people have to resort to crime in order to make a living which results in them being locked up. He could also be saying that they need to make a change, so that they are not behind bars. The song consists of the typical Hip-Hop layout; A looped drum pattern with kick, hats and a snare. There is also a...

War on Drugs in U.S.

...“would yield tax revenue of $34.3 billion annually, assuming legal drugs are taxed at rates comparable to those on alcohol and tobacco.” Furthermore, legalization would bring the drug trade into the sunlight, thereby ending the drug wars that have destroyed far too many human lives. As said before the War on Drugs is not effective. If drugs were legalized: 1. Taxes could be collected and used to open free clinics for those who finally decide enough is enough. 2. It would reduce the number in jail due to drug crimes, making more room for rapist, murderers, child molesters, etc. 3. Gang activity would be reduced 4. Regulated production of drugs. 5. Proper elimination of toxic byproducts from production of these drugs. In the word of 2pac: “And still I see no changes can't a bother get a little peace There's war in the streets and war in the middle east Instead of war on poverty they got a war on drugs so the police can bother me And I ain't never did a crime I ain't have to do But now I'm back with the facts givin' em back to you Don't let 'em jack you up, back you up, crack you up and pimps Smack you up” California: Marijuana legalization Legalization has (and will continue to) move the marijuana industry above ground, just as the repeal of alcohol prohibition restored the legal alcohol industry. A small part of the marijuana market might remain illicit—homegrown marijuana rather than moonshine whiskey—but if regulation and taxation are moderate,......

How Music Affected My Life

...also help to motivate me to get up and do certain things. Such as working out , cleaning up, and cooking. I love listening to music while on my way to school, and work, as I feel it helps me to prepare for the long day thats ahead of me. Although it may not be, I beleive music is the answer to all my life problems as it has been there throughout my whole life. I feel I can always depend on good music. I first fell in love with music when I was a young girl . I remember listening to "The Little Mermaid" soundtrack over and over on my pink walkman. Just the lyrics and melody took me to another place . Ever since then, music has been a huge part of my life. I listen to everything from 2Pac , Nas , Lil Wayne and Jay Z (Rap) Aaliyah, RKelly, Mary J Blige and Alicia Keyz (R&B) The Police, Metallica, AC/DC, Journey and U2 ( Pop/Rock) and my favorite Oldies from The Gap Band, Chacka Khan, The O'Jays, Aretha Franklin, The Chi-Lites, The Spinners oh' sheesh' the list goes on. It's kind of hard to just focus on one event or genre of music where music has affected my life. Because not only has it affected my life it has got me and continues to get me through my day to day life and struggles. I recently witnessed the passing of my Great Grandparents in November 2015 3 days apart. They were the most amazing people in my life besides my actual......

Popular Music of the 20th and 21st Century

...This solo album sold more than 40 million copies worldwide! Michael like Elvis earned a nickname. His nickname was the King of Pop. He incidentally was married to the daughter of Elvis Pressley for a period of time. He like his father-in-law, Elvis, also died at a young age long before his career was over. Other artists that were popular during this time include Cindy Lauper, Madonna, Boy George, and Prince. Popular songs from this time include “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”, ‘Like a Virgin”, “Do you Really Want to Hurt Me”, and “Purple Rain”. The 1990’s gave us Rap Music. Rap music is half-spoken, rather than song to a strong bass rhythm. Rap lyrics speak of guns, drugs, violence, and sex. Some Better known rappers are 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., and Eminem. 2Pac was a huge success selling over 75 million albums. If not for his untimely death in 1996, he may have surpassed other artists in record sales. He was responsible for many controversial albums about cop killers. Eminem was responsible for a rap song that really opened my eyes to the violence that is contained in most of these rap song. Eminem received enormous fame in 1999 with the release of his song “Slim Shady”. We have reviewed several different styles of music with examples. I think it amazing to see how the styles have changed over the period of years that we have looked at. Music just keeps evolving and gets better and better over time. I am sure that given the opportunity as we have had during this class,......
